Description
Mistress 9 is the primary antagonist of the Sailor Moon S season, also referred to as the Messiah of Silence. She is an extraterrestrial entity from the Tau Star System, a malevolent being that serves the greater entity Pharaoh 90. Her purpose is to open a gateway between dimensions so that Pharaoh 90 can enter Earth and assimilate it, transforming the planet into a new home for their kind.

Mistress 9 is not a fully independent being in the physical world; she exists as a parasitic spirit that requires a human host to manifest. She was implanted into the body of the young girl Hotaru Tomoe shortly after a laboratory accident nearly killed Hotaru. The entity was placed inside her as an egg by the Death Busters, who had made a pact with Hotaru’s father, Professor Souichi Tomoe. Once inside, Mistress 9 lies dormant for much of the story, occasionally surfacing to control Hotaru’s actions. During these moments, Hotaru’s eyes become blank and her hands sparkle with red energy. The possession weakens Hotaru’s body, leaving her frail and prone to seizures.

Mistress 9’s personality is markedly different from Hotaru’s gentle and lonely nature. When she fully awakens, she becomes arrogant, manipulative, and utterly confident in her power. She is narcissistic and views the people of Earth as inferior. Her loyalty to Pharaoh 90 is absolute; her ultimate motivation is to merge with him and become his partner, often described as his bride. She despises weakness and does not hesitate to dispose of her own allies, such as when she kills the underling Kaolinite after outliving her usefulness.

In terms of abilities, Mistress 9 possesses a wide range of supernatural powers. She can teleport and open dimensional gateways, which she uses to summon Pharaoh 90. She has the power to drain the souls and energy of others, absorbing multiple victims at once. She can also nullify incoming attacks, making her nearly invulnerable to conventional magical assaults. When she takes full control of Hotaru’s body, she accelerates its age to that of an adult woman, appearing as a tall figure with long black hair, purple eyes that sometimes turn red, and a black star insignia on her forehead. She can heal injuries and even cure illnesses, as shown when she heals Chibiusa’s injured arm while still partially dormant. She can also summon thorny vines and black roses to entrap areas, and in her true monstrous form, she becomes a gigantic, ghoulish creature with crystal spikes that can absorb all energy directed at her.

Mistress 9’s role in the story is that of the herald for the Silence, the cataclysmic event that Pharaoh 90 intends to bring. She spends much of her time manipulating events from within Hotaru’s body, sending Daimons to collect pure heart crystals. Her most critical act is stealing Chibiusa’s Heart Crystal, which gives her enough power to fully manifest and cast off her disguise. Her awakening shocks the Outer Senshi, who had been expecting the emergence of Sailor Saturn. Instead, they face the Messiah of Silence. She then uses the Holy Grail, tricked out of Sailor Moon, to channel power to Pharaoh 90.

Key relationships define her story. The most significant is her parasitic bond with Hotaru Tomoe. Hotaru’s soul remains alive within the same body, constantly resisting Mistress 9’s control. This internal struggle becomes the entity’s greatest weakness. Her relationship with Professor Tomoe is one of manipulation; he initially serves her aims but eventually breaks free from the Daimon Germatoid that possessed him and tries to reach his daughter. Mistress 9’s relationship with Chibiusa is also central because Chibiusa’s friendship with Hotaru plants the seeds of resistance that eventually lead to Mistress 9’s downfall.

The character’s development follows a trajectory from a dormant, muffled presence to an unleashed, violent force, and finally to a defeated entity whose hold is broken by love. In the anime, after Hotaru’s memories of her father and Chibiusa overpower Mistress 9’s control, the black star on her forehead shatters, revealing the symbol of Saturn. Mistress 9’s body vaporizes, allowing Sailor Saturn to emerge and ultimately seal away Pharaoh 90. In the manga, Mistress 9 is not destroyed but is forced to retreat along with Pharaoh 90, banished from Earth forever by Sailor Saturn and Sailor Pluto. In both adaptations, she serves as the catalyst for the introduction of Sailor Saturn and the Outer Senshi, and her defeat underscores the theme that the power of love and human connection can overcome even the most malevolent of forces.
