Andrea Tomoe, known in the original Japanese version as Hotaru Tomoe, is the civilian identity of Sailor Saturn, the Guardian of Silence and Destruction, also called the Soldier of Ruin and Rebirth. She is introduced in the third season of the 1990s anime, Sailor Moon S, and returns in the fifth season, Sailor Moon Sailor Stars. As a young girl of about twelve years old, she has short black hair, a pale complexion, and a frail, delicate constitution. Her life is marked by solitude and chronic illness; she lives with her father, Professor Soichi Tomoe, a brilliant scientist absorbed in strange experiments, while her mother is deceased. She has no friends at school and is profoundly lonely until she befriends Chibiusa, the young daughter of Sailor Moon. Her poor health and strange episodes are not a normal sickness but the result of her body being host to a malevolent extraterrestrial entity named Mistress 9, who was implanted within her when she was a child. Andrea is also the reincarnation of Sailor Saturn, one of the Outer Sailor Guardians. Her powers are unlike any other: she possesses the cataclysmic ability to destroy an entire planet or reset the evolution of a star system. Because of this, her awakening is greatly feared by the other Outer Guardians—Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Uranus), Michiru Kaioh (Sailor Neptune), and Setsuna Meioh (Sailor Pluto)—who initially consider eliminating her to prevent the end of the world. In the conflict with the Death Busters, her true nature as Sailor Saturn emerges. Wielding her signature weapon, the Silence Glaive, a massive scythe, she uses her suicidal technique Death Reborn Revolution to annihilate the enemy at the cost of her own life. After fulfilling her duty, Sailor Saturn dies, and Andrea is reborn as an infant. She is adopted by Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna, forming an unconventional family; she grows up calling Haruka "Papa," Michiru "Mama," and Setsuna "Mama" as well. Freed from Mistress 9, her personality becomes much happier, more expressive, and playful. As Sailor Saturn, she can use Silence Wall to create a protective barrier and the offensive attack Silence Glaive Surprise. Even in her civilian form, she has a natural talent for healing minor injuries. In her daily life, Andrea enjoys collecting lamps, reading, and eating soba noodles, and her favorite color is purple.
