Description
Sailor Saturn is the Guardian associated with silence, destruction, and rebirth, and in the anime season Sailor Moon S her civilian identity is Hotaru Tomoe, a frail twelve-year-old student at Mugen Academy. She is the last of the Sailor Guardians to be introduced in the series. In the original Japanese version and in most English-language versions her civilian name remains Hotaru, though some international localizations have given her a different civilian name. Her background is marked by early tragedy. When she was eight years old, a freak storm caused a fire that killed her mother and left Hotaru near death herself. Her father, the scientist Souichi Tomoe, made a desperate bargain to save her, but the arrangement also turned her into the host of the entity Mistress 9, an agent of the Death Busters. Because of this, Hotaru suffered from serious illness, seizures, blackouts, and spells of lost memory. An incident in which she unintentionally harmed a classmate made the other students at Mugen Academy avoid her entirely, leaving her isolated and friendless until she met Chibiusa.

Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, and Sailor Pluto are deeply afraid of Hotaru because her awakening as Sailor Saturn could destroy the entire planet, and at one point they consider killing her to prevent it. When Mistress 9 forcibly takes over Hotaru's body, Hotaru appears to be lost, but a final act of will allows her to awaken as Sailor Saturn at the climax of the season. Facing Pharaoh 90, she is prepared to destroy Earth along with the enemy, but she stops when she sees that Sailor Moon is still alive, deciding that such a drastic rebirth is not necessary. Instead, she uses her power to push Pharaoh 90 into another dimension and sacrifices her own life to ensure the enemy remains sealed away. Sailor Moon, using her own healing power, later restores Hotaru as an infant, and the child is taken into the care of Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna.
