TV Special
Description
Future Gohan is the alternate timeline counterpart of the main series character Gohan, appearing in the bleak future world where the androids have brought humanity to the brink of extinction. This version of Gohan lives in the timeline belonging to Future Trunks, a world where the Dragon Balls can no longer be used because the Z Fighters who protected Earth have been wiped out. In this future, Goku died from a viral heart disease, and shortly after, Androids 17 and 18 murdered the remaining Z Fighters when Gohan was still young.

Left with no other protectors, Gohan becomes Earth's sole defender. As a young man of twenty-three, he takes it upon himself to train Future Trunks, the son of Vegeta and Bulma, who is also a Saiyan-human hybrid and one of the few survivors. The apocalyptic circumstances of his world have profoundly shaped his personality. Future Gohan is far more serious, aggressive, and driven than his present timeline counterpart, carrying the immense weight of loss and responsibility. The death of his friends is his deepest source of pain; his transformation into a Super Saiyan was triggered by witnessing their murder at the hands of the androids. Despite this hardened exterior, he retains glimpses of his father Goku's calm and joking nature, and he shares a close bond with Trunks, whom he treats like a little brother.

His primary motivation is singular and desperate: to destroy the androids and save the remaining people of Earth. He fights not for glory but out of necessity, fully aware that he is likely outmatched. He dreams of being a scholar like his mainstream counterpart, but such aspirations were abandoned long ago. Instead, he dedicated his life to becoming a warrior, wearing a martial arts uniform modeled after his father's as a source of inspiration and strength.

Future Gohan's role in the story is that of a tragic mentor. The television special The History of Trunks depicts his final years as he agrees to train a young and inexperienced Trunks. Their relationship is the emotional core of this timeline; Gohan sees the boy as the last hope for the future and dedicates himself to preparing Trunks for the inevitable final battle. This selflessness is demonstrated in a pivotal battle at an amusement park. When the outmatched Trunks rushes in to help and is nearly killed, Gohan shields him from a devastating attack, losing his left arm in the process. With only one Senzu Bean left, he gives it to the injured Trunks instead of using it to regenerate his own arm.

This injury marks a significant turning point in his development. He continues to train Trunks with a single arm, watching his student grow stronger and closer to achieving the Super Saiyan transformation. However, knowing that another confrontation is inevitable, he makes the ultimate sacrifice. When the androids attack again, Gohan knocks Trunks unconscious to prevent him from following, and flies off to face them alone. Despite a courageous fight, he is overwhelmed by the combined power of Android 17 and Android 18 and is killed. Trunks awakens to find his master's body, and his overwhelming grief and rage finally trigger his own first transformation into a Super Saiyan.

As a combatant, Future Gohan is a skilled and powerful warrior, arguably the strongest fighter left on Earth in his timeline. He is able to achieve the Super Saiyan form, though his power is not enough to defeat both androids simultaneously. In the original manga, Android 17 claims he used less than half his full power to kill Gohan. His techniques reflect the training he received from his father and his mentor Piccolo. He is proficient in using the Kamehameha wave, the Masenko (a technique learned from Piccolo), and the Special Beam Cannon, which is also attributed to Piccolo's teachings. He is also shown using an energy shield, known as the Evil Barrier or Energy Shield, in battle. His fighting style is one of grim efficiency, reflecting his lack of resources and his years of solitary struggle, making him a complete warrior forged by tragedy rather than formal training in a peaceful world.
