Description
The character referred to in the anime special Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks as Future Gohan is the alternate timeline counterpart of the main series character Son Gohan. This version of Gohan is not a child but a young adult, roughly twenty-three years old, who has been forced to grow up in a post-apocalyptic world. Born on May 18th in the fictional Age 757, he is the half-Saiyan, half-human son of Goku and Chi-Chi. The divergence of his timeline from the main one occurs when Goku dies of a heart virus, leaving the Earth unprotected. Shortly after, the androids known as No. 17 and No. 18 appear and systematically murder the remaining Z-Fighters, leaving Gohan as the sole survivor and the Earth's last hope.

The personality of Future Gohan is defined by tragedy and a deep sense of responsibility. Far more serious, aggressive, and grim than his present-day counterpart, he has lost the timid and pacifist nature often associated with his younger self. Years of solitude, constant battle, and immense loss have stripped away his childhood hesitation. He has taken on the role of a hardened, stoic warrior, bearing both physical and emotional scars. He is fiercely determined to protect the last remnants of humanity and is willing to sacrifice everything for that cause. Though he carries a fatalistic outlook, he maintains a deep, unbreakable will to fight against impossible odds. In his quiet moments, he shows a gentleness shaped by loss, acting as a surrogate father figure to a young Trunks. His memory is marked by sorrow, and he often hallucinates the voice of his deceased mentor, Piccolo, as a coping mechanism for his shattered psyche.

His primary motivation is singular and unwavering: to defeat Androids No. 17 and No. 18 and avenge the death of his friends and family. This goal consumes his life, driving him to train relentlessly and to prepare the next generation for the fight. He wears a dogi, or martial arts uniform, that is identical to the one his father Goku wore, with his own kanji symbol for "rice" on the back. This is a symbolic act, done in the hope of inheriting his father's strength and spirit. His secondary, yet equally important, motivation is to ensure the survival of the future by training Trunks, Vegeta and Bulma's son, to become strong enough to one day challenge the androids.

In the story of The History of Trunks, Gohan plays the crucial role of mentor and tragic hero. He is the last active Z-Fighter, a lone warrior protecting the Earth. His primary function is to train a young Trunks in martial arts and the way of the Saiyan, teaching him techniques and how to survive. He represents the final resistance against the androids' tyranny. His death serves as the ultimate catalyst for Trunks, pushing the young half-Saiyan into a rage that unlocks his own Super Saiyan transformation and solidifies his resolve to change the future. Gohan's death is a pivotal, heartbreaking moment that defines Trunks's character and motivates his journey back in time.

Key relationships are central to his character. His bond with Future Trunks is the most significant; he is Trunks's master, protector, and the closest thing to a father figure the boy has ever known. He shows great patience and care in teaching Trunks, even knocking him unconscious to prevent the boy from following him to his death. His relationship with his former master, Piccolo, remains powerful even after death, as he visualizes Piccolo's spirit offering him guidance. He has a strained relationship with his mother, Chi-Chi, having largely cut contact with her to focus entirely on his mission and likely to spare her from being a target. He is also close to Bulma, who provides him with medical and technological support, treating him as a treasured friend and the only hope for her son's future.

The character's development shows the transformation of a frightened, gifted child into a hardened warrior and selfless leader. Forced to grow up instantly after the death of all his allies, he unlocks the power of a Super Saiyan through his immense rage and grief, becoming one of the most powerful beings in his world. His development is not about becoming stronger for personal glory, but about learning to fight on despite the certainty of defeat. His ultimate act of development is his acceptance of his own death to ensure that his will and knowledge are passed on to Trunks, whom he explicitly calls "our last hope".

Notable abilities include his mastery of the Super Saiyan transformation, which he uses to fight the androids on equal ground. He is a highly skilled martial artist, having been trained by Piccolo in his youth. He makes use of energy attacks such as the Masenko, a beam technique he fires from above his head, and the Kamehameha wave, which he learned from his father. He is also a proficient swordsman, having trained with a blade, and he passes on his sword to Trunks, which becomes the young warrior's signature weapon. Despite the immense power of his Super Saiyan form, it is ultimately insufficient to defeat the combined might of the two androids, a testament to the hopelessness of his world.
