TV Special
Description
Mirai Gohan is the alternate timeline counterpart of Gohan from the main Dragon Ball Z story, appearing primarily in the television special Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks. He is the son of Goku and Chi-Chi, and is a half-Saiyan, half-human hybrid. In his timeline, Goku died from a heart virus, and shortly afterward the Androids 17 and 18 murdered all of the other Z Fighters. These events forced Gohan to become the sole defender of Earth. He achieved the Super Saiyan transformation, presumably triggered by the trauma of witnessing his friends’ deaths, and spent the next thirteen years training alone while repeatedly challenging the Androids, despite being outmatched.

Personality wise, Mirai Gohan is far more serious and aggressive than his present‑day counterpart, shaped by the apocalyptic world he inhabits. He carries immense stress and pain from years of solitary struggle, yet he retains a calm, occasionally joking demeanor reminiscent of his father, Goku. He holds a deep, unyielding anger toward the Androids for the deaths of his loved ones, but he also hides his suffering in moments of peace, encouraging Trunks to enjoy life when possible. His primary motivation is to protect the remaining human survivors and to avenge his fallen comrades, even though he knows the odds are overwhelmingly against him. He accepts his role as the last line of defense with a do‑or‑die resolve.

In the story, Mirai Gohan serves as the mentor and older‑brother figure to Future Trunks, the son of Vegeta and Bulma. He trains Trunks in combat and teaches him discipline, empathy, and the importance of protecting others without losing one’s humanity. Their relationship is extremely close; Gohan refers to Trunks as his little brother. He is demanding in training but also warm and supportive, providing the only real emotional anchor in Trunks’ desolate world. Gohan’s key battle occurs when he fights the Androids alone at a ruined amusement park, during which he loses an arm while shielding Trunks from a fatal attack. He later makes a final stand against the Androids and is killed, his body discovered by Trunks in the rain. This death becomes the catalyst for Trunks’ first Super Saiyan transformation.

Developmentally, Mirai Gohan is a tragic figure who never had the chance to fully explore his potential. Unlike his main‑timeline counterpart, he never received Goku’s intensive training or unlocked his ultimate forms. Instead, he became a hardened, pure warrior, channeling all his time into training and planning strategies to defeat the Androids. He remains highly intelligent, able to quickly analyze situations, but his power is insufficient to overcome the combined threat of Android 17 and 18. Notable abilities include the Super Saiyan transformation, which grants him enhanced speed, strength, and ki output. He is proficient in techniques such as the Masenko, Kamehameha, and Flight, and he demonstrates considerable skill in hand‑to‑hand combat. Despite his ultimate defeat, his legacy endures through Trunks, who carries his teachings and memories into the past to change the future.
