Description
Kenji Himura is the son of Kenshin Himura and Kaoru Kamiya, and he appears as an adolescent in the anime OVA Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection. Physically, he bears a strong resemblance to his father, though he has his mother's blue eyes and lacks the iconic X-shaped scar on his cheek. In this story, Kenji has grown up with a deep-seated resentment toward his father, believing that Kenshin abandoned both him and his mother due to his long absences from home. Despite this anger, he remains very fond of his mother, Kaoru, and is protective of her, feeling that she suffered from loneliness because of Kenshin's wandering nature.
Driven by a desire to understand and surpass his father's legendary strength, Kenji leaves home for Kyoto to seek out Hiko Seijūrō XIII, Kenshin's master, hoping to be taught the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū swordsmanship style. His primary motivation is to acquire a power like his father possessed as the hitokiri Battōsai, believing that this is the path to creating his own legend and proving himself. At this point in his life, Kenji holds a deluded view of his father's past, mistakenly believing that his greatness came from his ability to kill.
Kenji's role in the story is central to its theme of legacy and understanding. His misguided quest leads to a confrontation with Myōjin Yahiko, who has tracked him down at the request of a dying Kaoru. This duel serves as the pivotal moment for his character. During the fight, Yahiko acknowledges Kenji's natural genius as a swordsman but ultimately defeats him using Kenshin's sakabatō, the reverse-blade sword. With that final strike, Yahiko forces Kenji to experience the full weight of his father's true philosophy, showing him that Kenshin's real strength lay not in killing, but in his devotion to protecting life and his self-sacrifice for others.
Following his defeat and enlightenment, Yahiko presents Kenji with the sakabatō as a late genpuku, or coming-of-age, gift. This act is intended to help him understand and honor the way his parents lived. Through this key relationship with Yahiko, who acts as both rival and mentor, Kenji undergoes significant development, moving from a resentful and arrogant youth to one who begins to comprehend his father's legacy. By the end of the story, an older Kenji is seen walking beneath the cherry blossoms with a young girl named Chizuru Raikouji, and he vows that they will live happily together. In terms of notable abilities, Kenji is portrayed as a genius with immense natural talent for swordsmanship, capable of executing complex techniques with ease, a fact that Yahiko himself admits during their duel.
