Description
Miaka Yuki is a fifteen-year-old junior high school student living in Tokyo with her mother and older brother Keisuke. She comes from a divorced family and initially struggles with a lack of confidence in her own abilities. Her ordinary life changes when she and her best friend Yui Hongo discover the Universe of the Four Gods, a mysterious book at the National Diet Library. Reading it transports them into an ancient Chinese fantasy world. Miaka is designated as the Priestess of Suzaku, and to return home, she must gather the seven Celestial Warriors of Suzaku and summon the god to receive three wishes. Her original motivation is to use one wish to enter the high school of her choice so she and Yui can stay together, but her desires gradually shift as she forms deeper bonds in the other world.

Personality-wise, Miaka is outgoing, optimistic, and amiable with friends and strangers. She tends to be guileless, sentimental, and naive, yet she sometimes surprises adults with insightful comments that reveal a deeper understanding. She is generous, compassionate, and slow to judge, always looking for the best in people, which can also be a weakness as she may overlook darker intentions. Her gluttony is a notable trait, as she eats constantly and shows enthusiasm for any type of food, which often leads to comedic situations but also reflects her zest for life. She is an avid anime fan and occasionally imitates characters she admires. Miaka creates an impression of someone who always needs help, and she often benefits from the protection and guidance of others.

As the protagonist and Priestess of Suzaku, Miaka's role involves traveling through the world of the book to locate the seven Celestial Warriors warriors destined to serve her. She must overcome obstacles, face battles against the opposing god Seiryu and its priestess, and learn to believe in herself and her convictions. Her development follows a clear arc from an unsure, daydreaming teenager to a more self-aware and courageous young woman who takes responsibility for her position and the people she loves. Through her trials, she gains confidence that also helps her face difficulties in the real world.

Key relationships are central to her growth. Her bond with Yui Hongo is foundational, encompassing deep friendship, rivalry, and themes of loyalty and betrayal when Yui becomes the Priestess of Seiryu and works against her out of jealousy and pain. Miaka's romance with Tamahome, one of the Celestial Warriors, is a major driving force in the story, and her love for him eventually becomes a primary reason she continues returning to the other world. She also forms strong ties with the other Suzaku warriors, including Emperor Hotohori, Nuriko, Chichiri, Tasuki, Chiriko, and Mitsukake, treating them as real people rather than fictional constructs and grieving deeply when any of them die. Her brother Keisuke becomes a crucial support in the real world, helping her navigate the mysteries of the book.

Miaka's abilities as priestess include the power to summon Suzaku, the legendary phoenix, once she has gathered all seven Celestial Warriors. This summoning allows her to make wishes, which is the ultimate expression of her role. She has no personal combat skills, however, and relies entirely on her warriors for protection in battle. Her strength lies in her empathy, determination, and ability to inspire loyalty and devotion in others. Over the course of the series, her connection to Suzaku deepens, and by the end, her understanding of her power allows her to navigate between the two worlds more easily. She ultimately transforms into a symbol of friendship, courage, and resilience.
