Description
Hotohori is the fourth emperor of the kingdom of Konan and one of the seven Celestial Warriors charged with protecting the Priestess of Suzaku. He is a young man of eighteen years with a slender, lean build, standing approximately 182 centimeters (about six feet) tall. His appearance is notably androgynous, characterized by waist-length dark brown or dark green hair usually tied back in a loose ponytail, and soft golden-brown eyes, a combination that leads many to initially mistake him for a woman. As the ruling sovereign, his formal attire consists of elaborate robes and crowns, but when joining the quest to find his fellow warriors, he wears a more practical traveling outfit of a simple crimson robe with gold trim over a white robe. The mark of the Suzaku warrior, the character for star, appears on the left side of his throat and can be manifested at will.

Born as the fourth emperor of Konan, Hotohori was entrusted with the crown at the age of fourteen following the death of his father, and his mother passed away not long after. His upbringing was isolated, as he was raised among adults and burdened with the affairs of the state from a very young age, which caused him to act older than his years. He has a complicated family history, including an elder brother named Shu Tendo, as well as several half-brothers and half-sisters, many of whom met untimely ends. This lonely childhood left him feeling emotionally starved, having never received genuine love or affection from his parents, who seemed to value him only for his status as a Celestial Warrior.

In terms of personality, Hotohori is a complex individual who presents a cool and majestic demeanor when on the throne, which is a result of his formal training and isolated upbringing. However, beneath this reserved exterior lies a warm, gentle, and surprisingly naive young man. He is also famously a narcissist, possessing a deep and open appreciation for his own beauty. He enjoys looking at his reflection and receiving compliments, but this vanity is portrayed as good-natured rather than malicious; he is generous with his self-admiration and does not use it to belittle others. His reign is characterized by a peace-loving and earnest nature. He is a kind and noble ruler who is deeply committed to the well-being of his people, often prioritizing their needs above his own comfort and health, and is pained by the thought of sending his subjects into a meaningless war. His sheltered life has left him somewhat ignorant of the world outside the palace, and he is often shocked by the poverty and struggles of commoners.

Motivation and role in the story are deeply tied to his loneliness. As a child, Hotohori learned the legend of the Priestess of Suzaku and became convinced she would be the one to save him from his solitude and love him for who he truly is. This sets the stage for his immediate and profound love for Miaka, the real-life priestess who arrives from another world. He meets her early in her journey and becomes her steadfast guardian and ally, using his authority and resources to aid her quest to gather all seven Suzaku warriors. In the story, he serves as a noble rival to Tamahome for Miaka's affections, and his unrequited love is a significant source of internal conflict.

Key relationships define much of his character arc. His love for Miaka is the most prominent; he is fiercely protective of her and willing to sacrifice his life for her. However, he ultimately steps aside when he realizes her heart belongs to Tamahome, demonstrating a selfless maturity. Later, he develops a genuine romantic relationship with a young woman named Houki. Initially drawn to her devotion, he comes to realize that she is the one who can truly save him from loneliness, and he marries her, with her later bearing him a son named Boushin. His primary antagonist is Nakago, the powerful warrior of the rival god Seiryuu. The conflict between Konan and the nation of Kutou, led by Nakago, forms the central military struggle of the story.

Hotohori undergoes notable development throughout the narrative. He learns from Miaka and his fellow warriors what true happiness and friendship feel like, moving beyond the lonely, duty-bound existence of his childhood. He matures from a man who fell in love with an idealized image of a savior into someone who can accept reality, let go of his selfish desires, and find love in a more attainable and mutual relationship with Houki. His personal journey also opens his eyes to the suffering of his people, transforming his rule from one of distant nobility to a more compassionate and engaged leadership.

Regarding notable abilities, Hotohori is a formidable warrior whose primary skill is swordsmanship. He received expert training in fencing and martial arts from a young age, in addition to his education in governance. As one of the Suzaku Seven, he is gifted a holy sword by the god Suzaku through the sage Taiitsukun, which he wields in battle. He also possesses the ability to make his celestial warrior mark appear on his neck when using his powers. In the climactic war against Kutou, he defends his kingdom fiercely and even manages to gravely wound Nakago, though the effort proves fatal. He dies from his injuries but is later reincarnated as a young boy named Shu Eian.
