TV Special
Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII is the thirteenth generation of a renegade samurai lineage, directly descended from the legendary historical bandit Ishikawa Goemon. While he is an occasional thief and a core member of the gang led by Arsène Lupin III, his identity is rooted first and foremost in the way of the samurai, a path he pursues with unwavering dedication to martial arts and an austere personal code.
Goemon is defined by a profound sense of pride in his abilities, particularly his peerless swordsmanship. This pride, however, makes him susceptible to deep shame when he fails at a task, such as when his signature sword is chipped or broken. In such moments, he will often disappear to meditate or train rigorously to purge himself of whatever perceived weakness led to his failure. In inactive moments, even when potential danger is near, he is frequently seated in a meditative trance, virtually unmovable from his posture. His allegiance to Japanese culture is strict and visible in nearly every aspect of his life. He wears traditional Japanese clothing, typically a hakama and fundoshi, and his diet consists almost exclusively of Japanese cuisine. He is a firm believer in Buddhism and Shinto, and his preferred music is enka, a style of traditional Japanese ballads.
Despite his typically stoic and mellow demeanor, Goemon is not without vulnerabilities that lead to moments of frustration, fear, or comedic outburst. His greatest weakness is an acute naivete around women. He is easily flustered by the advances of sultry women, whom he fears will distract him from his training, and he also readily trusts women who appear innocent or trustworthy, a trait that has frequently led him into trouble. He is also notably bad with money, easily falling for scams that promise to show him a path to enlightenment, and he can be easily bribed with Japanese food. He has a notable difficulty with modern technology, often struggling to operate a smartphone or drive a car, though the degree of his adaptability varies across different stories.
In the specific adventure of The Secret of Twilight Gemini, Goemon's role is defined by a confrontation with Sadachiyo, a highly trained assassin and fellow clan member hired by a rogue faction. This duel is the central challenge for Goemon throughout the special, pitting him against a formidable and dishonorable opponent. The climax of their rivalry comes in a final, fatal duel. During this exchange, Sadachiyo manages to break the tip of Goemon's legendary Zantetsuken sword, but the broken tip tragically lands in Sadachiyo's own back, piercing his heart and killing him. This event underscores the themes of honourable combat and the consequences of dishonourable actions that are central to Goemon's character.
Within the group, Goemon's key relationships are complex. His bond with Lupin III initially began as a professional rivalry, but it has grown into a deep, albeit often irritated, loyalty. He is easily annoyed by Lupin's antics, especially his infatuation with women, and he will oppose Lupin when a job conflicts with his morals. He is famously quoted as promising that his final act with Lupin will be to deliver his deathblow. However, he does not hesitate to help Lupin in serious situations. He shares a much more amicable and trusting relationship with Daisuke Jigen, whom he views as a fellow honorable warrior. In contrast, his relationship with Fujiko Mine is marked by deep distrust due to her repeated betrayals, though they can work together effectively when their goals happen to align.
In terms of personal development, Goemon's journey often revolves around the conflict between his strict samurai principles and the dishonorable nature of being a thief, as well as his struggle to overcome his own human weaknesses. These challenges force him to confront his pride, his naivety, and his rigid worldview, pushing him to either reaffirm his path or adapt to new circumstances. His character arc in various stories, including this one, is frequently tested by rivals or trials that challenge his swordsmanship and his spirit, leading to moments of introspection and growth, thereby reinforcing his status as a master warrior who is forever striving for perfection.
Goemon's most notable ability is his masterful skill in Iaidō, the art of quick-draw swordsmanship, and his possession of the Zantetsuken, a katana of legendary sharpness that can cut through virtually anything, including steel, bullets, and even lightning. Objects cut by the Zantetsuken typically fall apart a few seconds after he sheathes the blade. His speed and skill are such that he can deflect submachine gun fire and slice incoming bullets in half before they reach him. He is also a lifelong practitioner of several Japanese martial arts, including Kenjutsu, Karate, and Jujutsu, allowing him to easily defeat several trained fighters in unarmed combat. Furthermore, his training has granted him extraordinary physical abilities, such as underwater breath control for diving without equipment. Despite the deadly nature of his sword, Goemon very rarely takes a human life, usually only doing so in the context of a formal duel against an opponent who has proven themselves to be dishonorable.
