Description
Hikaru Hiyama is a central character in the romantic comedy series Kimagure Orange Road, serving as one of the key figures in its main love triangle. She is a middle school student who is two years younger than the protagonist Kyosuke Kasuga and her best friend Madoka Ayukawa. Her date of birth is November 15th, which interestingly makes it the same as Kyosuke's birthday. Physically, she is recognized by her cheerful appearance, characterized by short, light chestnut hair and often depicted with a noticeable tear-shaped mark near her right eye.
When first introduced, Hikaru presents a misleading front. She initially comes across as unpleasant, a brawler, and a tougher talker than the delinquent-styled Madoka. However, this aggressive exterior quickly dissolves once she becomes close to Kyosuke, revealing a true personality that is kind, sweet, energetic, and remarkably loyal to those she cares about. As an only daughter who has been somewhat sheltered, she retains a distinct childlike quality. When extremely excited or happy, she has a tendency to slip into a form of baby talk, a trait considered endearing by Japanese standards. This vibrant and honest nature makes her an effective atmosphere maker, often brightening the mood around her. Despite her passionate energy, she is not particularly skilled academically and has been shown to have a poor singing voice, though she does possess a talent for drawing.
Hikaru's primary motivation throughout the story is her love for Kyosuke. She falls for him instantly after witnessing him make an incredibly long and impressive basketball shot using his esper powers, which she misunderstands as a feat of pure athleticism. From that moment on, she pursues him with a single-minded and aggressive affection, famously referring to him exclusively by the English endearment Darling, even before she learned his actual name. Her role in the narrative is defined by this unrequited love, as she remains happily unaware that Kyosuke had already fallen in love with Madoka at first sight, a fact that his and Madokas indecisiveness forces them to hide from her to prevent hurting her feelings.
Her most significant relationship is a complex web of affection involving both Madoka and Kyosuke. She has been Madokas best and almost only friend for years, a bond formed when a pre-teen Madoka rescued a bully from taking Hikarus favorite medallion. Hikaru and a boy named Yusaku Hino were the only ones who were never afraid of Madokas tough reputation. This deep friendship is paralleled by her romantic feelings for Kyosuke, who, despite caring for her deeply, views her more as a younger sister than a potential girlfriend. Hikaru is also a classmate and close friend of Kyosukes younger sisters, the twins Manami and Kurumi Kasuga.
Throughout the main story, Hikarus character remains static in her happy pursuit, making the eventual revelation of the truth a significant turning point. She ultimately learns that Kyosuke has always loved Madoka, leading to a painful moment of heartbreak but also demonstrating her maturity. In the series only continuation, set several years later, it is revealed that Hikaru has grown from her youthful heartbreak, having successfully moved on to become a professional stage dancer working in the United States. While she has no supernatural abilities herself, her most notable traits are her exceptional emotional resilience and an unwavering loyalty that challenges both herself and the other main characters to confront their true feelings.
