Description
Jingoro is the pet cat of the Kasuga family in the anime adaptation of Kimagure Orange Road, as he does not appear in the original manga. His name is a reference to the legendary Edo-period wood sculptor Hidari Jingorō, who is believed to have created the famous Sleeping Cat carving at the Nikkō Tōshō-gū shrine. He is a large, overweight feline whose primary role is to serve as a long-suffering resident of the Kasuga household.

In terms of personality, Jingoro is portrayed as a largely helpless and put-upon animal. He often finds himself as the target of mischief or outright abuse stemming from the Kasuga family's supernatural abilities, which they refer to as The Power. As a result, he is frequently caught in comical and unfortunate situations beyond his control. The constant harassment by the younger Kasuga siblings, the twin sisters Kurumi and Manami, is a recurring theme in his life. Because of this treatment, Jingoro is motivated by a strong desire to escape from the Kasuga household and has a tendency to repeatedly run away, attempting to find peace away from the family's psychic torment. However, his efforts are almost always futile, as the twins can easily use their powers to retrieve him from miles away with a mere thought.

His role in the story is that of a supporting character and a source of visual comedy. He acts as a silent witness to the chaotic lives of the main characters, particularly the romantic entanglements of Kyosuke Kasuga, Madoka Ayukawa, and Hikaru Hiyama. Despite being an animal, Jingoro is occasionally given storylines that focus on his own experiences. One episode, titled Don't Cry, Jingoro, delves into his emotional world, depicting a dilemma related to unrequited affection and the universal fears associated with young love. In this context, his journey explores themes of courage and vulnerability, proving his character can move beyond simple comic relief to offer heartfelt and sincere moments. Through these experiences, he demonstrates a capacity for loyalty and showcases a personality deeper than his usual hapless nature suggests.

Regarding his key relationships, Jingoro is most connected to the three Kasuga children. Kyosuke is often portrayed as a sympathetic figure towards the cat, while Kurumi and Manami, though presumably caring, are the primary sources of Jingoro's daily distress due to their liberal use of telekinesis and other powers on him. Over the course of the series, Jingoro shows a degree of development, learning lessons about confronting emotions and the nature of companionship, even if his fundamental role as the family's favorite victim remains largely unchanged. As a normal cat, he possesses no notable supernatural abilities of his own; his significance comes entirely from his reactions to and interactions with the Kasuga family's extraordinary powers.
