Description
Mao Tsukuda is a first-year student at Kunogi Academy High School, recognizable by her freckled face and braided ponytail. She exhibits a fiercely competitive nature tempered by romantic inclinations. Driven to establish Kunogi as a powerhouse in girls' soccer, she displays arrogance after wins, notably gloating during a practice match victory against Warabi High. Composed individuals like Sumire Suou easily agitate her, as she interprets their calmness as emotional detachment. Off the pitch, she harbors unrequited feelings for Oshio Kohei, a boy from another school, often reciting self-composed poetry about him; this infatuation visibly alters her demeanor in his presence.

Her soccer career began in middle school, sharing a club with Haruna Ito and Rei Kutani. Her advanced skills earned her a place on the U-17 Japan Women's National Team before high school. She later convinced Ito to join her at Kunogi Academy. Her history with Kutani remains strained, marked by open dislike.

At Kunogi, Tsukuda primarily plays left fullback, though she is equally capable as a right side-back. Her playing style leverages exceptional energy, stamina, and speed to disrupt opponent attacks and fuel offensive pushes. She excels at strong defensive marking and demonstrates adaptability, such as when she unexpectedly played goalkeeper effectively during a futsal tournament despite no prior experience.

Key events include her defensive contributions securing Kunogi's victory in the practice match against Warabi. She later encountered Oshio Kohei near the Sugiyama Soccer shop during the futsal tournament. When Warabi proposed forming a joint team for that tournament, Tsukuda demanded Sumire Suou kneel and beg as her condition. Suou countered by playing a recording of Tsukuda's love poetry, coercing her agreement to avoid further embarrassment.

Her relationships are complex: she maintains a close friendship with longtime teammate Haruna Ito and respects Kunogi's captain, Mizuki Kaji, while fearing Kaji's temper. Her rivalry with Sumire Suou is intensely contentious; after Suou caused her to fall during the practice match, Tsukuda took it as a personal challenge, actively seeking to provoke and humiliate Suou through frequent arguments and text-message confrontations. Her animosity towards Rei Kutani stems from middle-school jealousy over Ito's talent. Her name combines the characters for "genuine" (真) and "center" (央) in "Mao," while "Tsukuda" means "cultivated rice field" (佃).
