Description
Mawata Awayuki is a fourteen-year-old girl who serves as a supporting character in the anime Prétear. She is the stepsister of the protagonist, Himeno Awayuki, and the full sister of Mayuni Awayuki. On the surface, Mawata appears to be the perfect child of the family: intelligent, composed, and outwardly calm. However, this composed demeanor is a carefully maintained facade that conceals deep loneliness and the unresolved grief she carries following the death of her father. Her only emotional outlet is the series of postcards she sends to the Leafe Knight Sasame, written under the pen name Miss Silk. Mawata's motivations are largely driven by her longing for connection; she initially shares a tentative bond with Himeno after recognizing their mutual feelings of loss, but that bond fractures when she sees Himeno with Hayate, triggering feelings of jealousy and betrayal. Mawata harbors romantic feelings for Sasame, but her love is unrequited, as Sasame is in love with the former Prétear, Takako. This emotional vulnerability is exploited by the antagonist, who uses Mawata's love for Sasame as a tool to fuel the Great Tree of Fenrir. Throughout the story, Mawata's role shifts from a distant stepsister to a key victim whose anguish directly empowers the central conflict. Her development culminates when her family—including Himeno—bravely attempts to rescue her from a magical bubble, and she is ultimately freed and reunited with them. By the series end, Mawata finds a measure of happiness alongside Takako and Sasame. She does not possess any magical abilities; her significance lies in her emotional journey and the way her grief is weaponized by the forces of darkness.
