Description
Pai Thunder is one of the four main pilots in the anime Hyper Combat Unit Dangaioh, and she stands out among them for her fierce independence and formidable physical power. She is 22 years old and is the daughter of Captain Galimos, the leader of the Bunker Space Pirates. Despite her privileged connection to the pirate captain, her father had her handed over to the scientist Dr. Tarsan to be psychologically reconditioned and physically enhanced, wanting her to become even more powerful than she already was. As a result, Pai begins the story as a brainwashed ESPer whose memories were suppressed while she was trained to serve as a weapon.

In terms of personality, Pai is the most rebellious member of the team. She strongly resents authority and resists being controlled by others, which puts her at odds with her father's plans for her and with the conditioning imposed on her. Her defiance is paired with a blunt, forceful nature, and she relies on her tremendous physical strength as both a fighter and a pilot. Her power is rooted in her great physical capabilities, making her the physically strongest of the group and giving her a straightforward, aggressive fighting style.

Pai's motivations shift over the course of the story. Initially, like her fellow pilots Mia Alice, Roll Kran, and Lamba Nom, she is a tool shaped by Dr. Tarsan, but the quartet escapes from his ship and begins reclaiming their identities. When Pai regains her memories following an encounter with two of Tarsan's other creations, she makes her way to the Bunker's capital ship and confronts Galimos, revealing herself to him as his daughter Barius. She attempts to reconnect with her father and win his approval, but he rejects her horribly. After this rejection, she renounces her birthright and her father's cause, fully committing herself to her teammates instead. Her arc is defined by rejecting the authority that tried to mold her and choosing loyalty to the people who became her found family.

Within the story, Pai serves as the emotional and physical counterweight of the team. Her role includes not only fighting alongside her companions but also triggering key moments where the group's shared psychic bonds are tested. Together with Mia, Roll, and Lamba, she combines her personal machine with theirs to form the giant robot Dangaioh, and their combined psionic force is what makes the super robot so powerful. Pai's abilities contribute directly to these combined attacks, and her strength is essential in both close combat and the formation of Dangaioh itself.

Her key relationships are with her father, Captain Galimos, whose rejection fuels her break from the Bunker, and with Dr. Tarsan, who both created her condition and later changes his heart to support the team. Her dynamic with her fellow pilots, especially Mia, deepens through battle and shared memory recovery. By the end of her development, Pai evolves from a brainwashed subordinate into a defiant figure who accepts her own identity, rejects her father's legacy, and stands firmly beside her comrades in their fight against the Bunker Space Pirates.
