Movie
Description
Chan Agi is a character who appears as a technical officer and mechanic for the Earth Federation task force Londo Bell during the conflict known as the Second Neo Zeon War. She is dispatched from Anaheim Electronics, the major mobile suit manufacturer, and serves aboard the flagship Ra Cailum. Her primary professional role is to oversee the development and maintenance of the Nu Gundam, the custom mobile suit built for the legendary pilot Amuro Ray, with whom she shares a close personal relationship.
In terms of personality, Chan is portrayed as a reserved, intelligent, and emotionally mature woman. She acts as an emphatic and patient partner to Amuro, using her technical knowledge and calm demeanor to support him as he prepares for battle. She is deeply concerned by his gloomy and often self-sacrificing mannerisms as he faces his longtime rival, Char Aznable. Her actions are consistently motivated by her genuine care for Amuro's wellbeing and her desire to protect him, even if it means putting herself in harm's way. She also displays professional dedication and courage, such as when she mans an anti-aircraft gun post and successfully shoots down the Neo Zeon ace Rezin Schneider, a feat made possible in part by her connection to a sample of the mysterious Psyco Frame technology.
Chan's role in the story is deeply intertwined with Amuro Ray, functioning as his confidant and lover. Her presence creates a contrast to other female characters in the narrative, particularly the young and powerful Newtype Quess Paraya, who develops a hostile rivalry with Chan, referring to her as a hag out of jealousy for Amuro's attention. Chan's motivations are driven by her love for Amuro and her unease about the untested Psyco Frame technology integrated into his Nu Gundam. She keeps a T-shaped sample of the Psyco Frame for study, which gradually enhances her own Newtype sensitivity, allowing her to sense Amuro's presence in space.
During the final battle to prevent the asteroid Axis from falling to Earth, Chan makes a fateful decision after sharing an intimate moment with Amuro. Worried that he intends to sacrifice his life to stop Char, she takes off in a heavily damaged Re-GZ mobile suit to find him and offer whatever assistance she can, believing her Psyco Frame sample might give him the edge he needs. She confronts Quess Paraya, who is piloting a powerful mobile armor, at the same time that the young Hathaway Noa attempts to persuade Quess to stop fighting. Recognizing Quess as a dangerous threat to Hathaway, Chan fires a missile at the mobile armor. Her attack inadvertently strikes and kills Quess. Enraged by the death of Quess before his eyes, Hathaway opens fire on Chan's damaged suit, killing her.
Chan's development throughout the story is subtle but significant, as she transforms from a supporting engineer into an active participant in the battle, driven by her personal connection to Amuro. Following her death, the Psyco Frame sample she carried is cast adrift in space, where its unique properties emit a strange green light that ultimately helps Amuro and the remaining mobile suits push Axis away from Earth in a miraculous display of collective will. Her notable abilities include her high-level expertise in mobile suit engineering and development, particularly regarding the advanced Psyco Frame technology. Though not a designated combat pilot, she demonstrates courage and surprising competence in mobile suit combat, as well as effective use of ship-based anti-aircraft weaponry.
