Description
Cindy, also known as Dr. Zed, is a central figure in the animated film Golgo 13: The Professional. She is introduced as the beautiful daughter of the elusive and powerful Sicilian Mafia boss known only as Dr. Z, a shadowy crime lord who rules over the Sicilian underworld. However, this is a carefully constructed facade. The truth, which the assassin Golgo 13 eventually uncovers, is that Cindy and Dr. Z are the same person. She is the mastermind behind the criminal empire that others believe to be controlled by a mysterious man.
The character projects a dual nature that is central to her role in the story. On the surface, she presents herself as a lustrous, goddess-like woman, one who is accustomed to luxury, surrounded by bodyguards, and who becomes infatuated with Golgo 13 after he effortlessly incapacitates her men. She is seductive and appears to be a pawn in her father's dangerous world, inviting the assassin back to her mansion and sleeping with him. Beneath this alluring exterior, however, lies the cold and calculating mind of a crime boss. She is ruthless, deceptive, and entirely in control, playing the part of the innocent daughter to protect her true identity and maintain her power. Her motivations are rooted in self-preservation and the protection of her criminal enterprise. She toys with Golgo 13, warning him that no one who goes after her father has ever survived, while simultaneously setting him up to be killed by her henchmen.
In the narrative, Cindy serves as both the target of Golgo 13's assassination contract and a formidable adversary who matches wits with him. Her role shifts from a potential romantic interest to a lethal opponent once her secret is exposed. The assignment to kill Dr. Z is taken on by Golgo 13, who infiltrates the organization by getting close to Cindy. The relationship between the two is the core of this plot thread, built on a foundation of mutual manipulation. Cindy uses her charm and body to draw Golgo in, believing she can control or eliminate him, while Golgo uses the intimacy to get close enough to uncover the truth.
The dynamic between them is defined by suspicion and deception. After surviving an ambush by Dr. Z's men, Golgo investigates Cindy's mansion and discovers a telephone hidden in her safe is a fake, leading him to the realization that there is no separate Dr. Z and that Cindy has been playing a role all along. He calls her to reveal his discovery, and she, now unmasked, arms herself for a final confrontation. The character does not undergo development or redemption; rather, her true nature is revealed. Her deception fails, leading directly to her demise. She meets her end on a beach, where she arrives on horseback and attempts to kill Golgo 13 with a MAC-10 submachine gun. Before she can fire, the assassin kills her with a single, precise rifle shot to the chest. Her notable abilities are those of a master manipulator and a skilled deceiver. She is adept at acting, capable of maintaining a complex lie for the sake of her empire, and demonstrates the will to personally engage in violence when her back is against the wall.
