Description
Cain Carter, known in his transformed state as Teknoman Sabre, is a central antagonist and the twin brother of the protagonist Slade, who is known as Teknoman Blade. Before the alien invasion that sets the story in motion, Cain was part of a family that was captured and subjected to a horrific transformation process by the alien force known as the Venomoids. He was awakened as a Teknoman by the alien leader Darkon to serve as a primary weapon, taking over the mission to destroy Blade after a previous warrior, Dagger, was defeated.
In his human life, Cain was the younger twin brother of Slade. He carried deep-seated feelings of resentment and an inferiority complex toward his brother, feelings that predated their capture. These stemmed from incidents such as feeling he was unfairly helped during survival training and being unfairly blamed for a family tragedy, leading him to believe he was always seen as lesser in their father's eyes. His transformation into a Teknoman, which involved a parasite being implanted in his mind to enforce loyalty, amplified these existing negative emotions into direct, focused hatred. As Sabre, his personality becomes sadistic and largely devoid of emotion except for intense rage and anger. He is calculating and ruthless, using his intimate knowledge of his twin to exploit Blade's psychological weaknesses and physical limitations, such as the 30-minute time limit after which Blade loses control.
Sabre's primary motivation evolves beyond simply serving Darkon and the Venomoid invasion. He becomes obsessively driven to destroy his brother personally, viewing their conflict as a way to finally prove his own superiority on equal ground. This obsession is so complete that defeating Blade becomes his single goal in life, superseding the larger alien conquest. His role in the story is that of Blade's most personal and powerful enemy. He is introduced as a terrifying mirror image of the hero, using similar weapons and abilities but corrupted for evil purposes. He serves as a constant physical and psychological threat, pushing Blade to his limits and forcing him to confront the dark potential within his own power.
Key relationships define Sabre's actions. His relationship with his brother Slade is the core of his character, a toxic blend of familial bond and murderous rivalry. He is also the brother of a younger sister, Shara, whom he tortures without remorse, demonstrating the depth of his emotional corruption. While he serves Darkon, his loyalty is secondary to his personal vendetta, and he even accepts power upgrades that he knows may destroy him if it gives him the edge he needs to kill his brother.
Sabre undergoes significant development as the series progresses. He is defeated by Blade after pushing his brother beyond the time limit, an event that only deepens his hatred. Later, when Shara attempts to self-destruct to kill him and other Teknomen, Sabre uses his ultimate attack at maximum power to deflect the explosion, an act that severely injures him and forces him to temporarily withdraw. During his recovery, Darkon evolves him into a new, more powerful form, granting him abilities that parallel Blade's own advanced state. His development culminates in a final, desperate battle where he is ultimately killed. In his dying moments, freed from the alien parasite's control, he redeems himself by giving his Teknoman crystal to Blade, acknowledging his brother's strength and expressing a final, tragic hint of their original bond.
As a Teknoman, Sabre possesses formidable abilities that mark him as one of the most powerful of his kind. His design features a black and red color scheme that visually represents his villainous nature. He wields a double-bladed Tek Lancer that can be used as a ranged boomerang or extended into an energy whip for flexible attacks. His shoulder armor, called the Ram Shoulder, can detach to become a pair of gauntlets that deploy blades for close-quarters combat. His most destructive technique is the Voltekka, a powerful energy blast fired from his chest. Later in the series, he acquires an enhanced ability called the Psy Voltekka, which is mentally guided and can absorb the energy of other Teknomen's attacks, making him an even more dangerous adversary.
