Description
Pops Corredor, known as Pops Racer in English-language adaptations and Daisuke Mifune in the original Japanese version, is the father of the Racer family and a central supporting figure in the anime Speed Racer. His past includes two very different careers. In his youth he was a champion wrestler who competed under the ring name Dragon Racer. He later left wrestling behind and trained as an engineer and mechanic, working in the automobile racing industry. After he was dismissed from his job at a corporate racing company, he decided to establish his own independent team and workshop, founding the family business known in the original version as Mifune Motors and in the English adaptation as Racer Motors. It was through this company that he designed, built, and continually maintained the Mach 5, the high-performance racing car driven by his son Speed, with the red M on its hood serving as the emblem of the family concern.

Personality-wise, Pops is a methodical, proud, and deeply caring family man. He is a gifted mechanic and automotive engineer, regarded as the technical brain behind the racing operation. He can be stern and protective, especially where his children are concerned, and his strong will has at times put him at odds with them. His firm refusal to allow his older son Rex to continue racing after a serious accident led to a bitter argument and Rex's decision to leave home, an event that shaped the family for years. At the same time, he is genuinely devoted to his children and to the family's shared passion for racing, and he takes great pride in Speed's skill as a driver.

His motivations revolve around two main goals: building competitive, reliable racing cars and keeping his family safe. His engineering ambition is expressed through constant improvements to the Mach 5 and the design of vehicles for the team, while his protective instincts drive his opposition to the more dangerous aspects of his sons' involvement in the sport. He wants his children to succeed, but on terms he considers safe and honest, and he carries the weight of the estrangement with Rex.

In the story Pops functions as the family patriarch, team owner, chief engineer, and mechanic. He prepares the Mach 5 for races, directs the pit crew with the help of his assistant Sparky, and offers technical guidance and support during Speed's adventures, often becoming involved in the dangerous situations that arise around the races. His inventions and expertise regularly give the team the means to overcome obstacles.

His key relationships define much of his character. With Speed, he is a supportive and sometimes overprotective father who passes on his knowledge and ultimately accepts Speed's choice to race. With Rex, later known as the masked driver Racer X, he shares a painful history of conflict and separation, though his underlying love for his lost son remains. He is the husband of Mom Racer and the father of the youngest son Spritle, and he leads the household as its head. Sparky serves as his capable assistant and has inherited much of his mechanical style and talent.

Over the course of the series Pops shows a quiet development from a father who tried to steer his children away from danger to one who trusts Speed's judgment and supports his path, while the unresolved relationship with Rex remains a source of emotional depth beneath his gruff exterior.

Notable abilities include his exceptional mechanical skill and engineering imagination, demonstrated by the creation of the Mach 5 and its many special functions, as well as his race strategy and pit management. His past as a professional wrestler also gives him considerable physical strength, which he has used when the family's safety has been threatened.
