Description
Daisuke Mifune, known in English adaptations as Pops Racer, is the father of the series' protagonist, Speed Racer, and a central figure in the family-owned racing team. His background is unique among mechanic characters, as he is a former champion heavyweight wrestler who transitioned into a career as a race car builder and owner. This past career as a wrestler explains his robust, overweight physique and his signature attire, which typically consists of an athletic red shirt and a beige mechanic's cap. His career change was spurred by a professional falling out; he left a large automotive manufacturing company after a dispute with a corporate superior who opposed the development of a new engine, leading him to found his own enterprise, Mifune Motors.

Personality-wise, Daisuke is characterized by a fiery and explosive temper, which often provides comic relief within the story. Despite his hotheaded exterior, his primary motivating force is the safety and well-being of his family. This intense protectiveness manifests as a significant point of conflict in the narrative, as he is firmly opposed to his son Speed pursuing a career as a professional race car driver. His fear is rooted in a past family tragedy: his overbearing concern for his children is what caused his eldest son, Rex, to run away from home. This loss makes him deeply reluctant to allow Speed to enter the dangerous world of professional racing, as he secretly fears experiencing another such loss.

In his role within the story, Daisuke serves as the brilliant but reluctant engineer behind the Mach 5, the series' iconic supercar. His design skills are unparalleled, allowing him to create powerful engines that give his cars superior performance and high-speed capabilities. While he is initially an obstacle to Speed's ambitions, his love for his son ultimately leads him to support the team from the garage, building and maintaining the vehicles that make Speed's racing possible. His key relationships are defined by family. Besides his conflict with Speed, his relationship with his wife, Aya Mifune (Mom Racer), is one of partnership, and his dynamic with his youngest son, Spritle, is often played for comedic effect. The shadow of his estranged son, Rex, who later returns as the mysterious Racer X, hangs over the family and is a constant reminder of the consequences of his earlier parenting.

While his character does not undergo a dramatic transformation, there is a notable development in his stance toward Speed. He evolves from a firm opponent of racing to a grudging and supportive father who, despite his worries, works to ensure his son has the best possible machine to win races. As for notable abilities, Daisuke is not only a mechanical genius and expert engine designer but also retains the formidable combat skills from his wrestling days, making him nearly unmatched in a physical confrontation despite his heavy build. This combination of technical brilliance and physical prowess defines him as a "Genius Bruiser" archetype.
