Description
Geist, designated MD-02, is a genetically engineered super-soldier created on the planet Jerra through a scientific process known as Bioclone theory. He was originally developed by the Jerran Regular Army as a Most Dangerous Soldier, or MDS, designed to function as a supreme killing machine with capabilities far surpassing those of ordinary troops. However, every MDS unit developed homicidal insanity, and Geist was no exception. His combat was so extraordinarily ferocious and uncontrollable that the military ordered him placed in suspended animation aboard a stasis satellite, which was then launched into Jerra's orbit. Years later, the satellite crashed back to the surface, awakening Geist and returning him to a world still ravaged by war.
In terms of personality, Geist is stoic, expressionless, and driven almost entirely by an insatiable lust for battle. He exhibits no empathy, desire for companionship, or interest in personal gain beyond the pursuit of conflict. His emotions are suppressed or absent entirely, and he communicates in few words, preferring to let his actions speak. He shows no romantic interest in those who are drawn to him, viewing other people only as sources of information or as obstacles to be removed. His programming overwhelms any trace of humanity he might have possessed, making him cold, methodical, and utterly relentless.
Geist's primary motivation is the act of fighting itself. He seeks worthy adversaries and will go to extreme lengths to create situations that allow him to engage in combat. This is most clearly demonstrated when he chooses to activate the doomsday weapon known as Death Force, a device designed to annihilate all life on Jerra, simply to generate an enemy he can fight. He does not fight for a cause, for survival, or for others; he fights because his nature compels him to do so.
In the story, Geist serves as both protagonist and antagonist. After awakening, he kills the leader of a bandit gang and takes command, forming a temporary and uneasy alliance with Colonel Krutes of the Regular Army to infiltrate the Brain Palace and stop the Death Force from being activated. However, once he reaches the control room, Geist overrides the deactivation and unleashes the Death Force anyway, condemning the planet to destruction. In the sequel, set less than a year later, Geist occupies himself by dismantling the Death Force machines one by one. He confronts Krauser, a fellow MDS unit designated MD-01, who serves as his predecessor and rival. Geist ultimately defeats Krauser in hand-to-hand combat while the Death Force machines consume the refugees under Krauser's protection. By the end, Geist's helmet is shown empty amid the ruins, suggesting he has moved on to continue his endless battle.
Key relationships in Geist's life are defined by conflict and utility. Colonel Krutes, Geist's former superior, sees him as a dangerous liability and attempts to have him killed, only to be killed by Geist himself. Vaiya, a female bandit, becomes infatuated with Geist's strength, but he shows no reciprocation and treats her as merely a source of intelligence. Krauser is both a mirror and a rival: another genetically engineered soldier who seeks to protect the remnants of humanity, making him the only opponent capable of challenging Geist on equal terms. In the prequel comic, Lieutenant Leigh Wong advocates for Geist's use in combat, recognizing his efficiency, while Colonel Stanton initially rejects him as a soulless machine before ultimately accepting him in his final moments.
Geist undergoes little to no emotional or moral development throughout the series. He begins as a cold, unstoppable killing machine and remains one until the end. His actions become more extreme, but his core nature never changes. If anything, he becomes more committed to his destructive path, as seen in his decision to activate the Death Force.
Geist possesses a range of notable abilities derived from his genetic engineering. His physical strength, speed, reflexes, and endurance are far beyond human norms, allowing him to defeat entire squads of soldiers and advanced war machines with ease. He is a master of hand-to-hand combat and proficient with bladed weapons, particularly his signature combat knife. He also wields a customized powered suit, which he acquires early in the first story and modifies to suit his fighting style. This suit, often accompanied by a long cape and a helmet that obscures most of his face, becomes his trademark appearance. In addition to his physical prowess, Geist is highly resilient and capable of surviving falls from great heights, explosions, and direct confrontation with powerful robots. He also shows an ability to dismantle complex machinery, as demonstrated by his systematic destruction of the Death Force units.
