TV-Series
Description
Ako Atarashi is a first-year high school student at Achiga Girls' Academy and a central character in the story's focus on reviving the school's mahjong club. She has long brown hair usually styled into two side pigtails and brownish-red eyes, standing at 149 centimeters tall with a slim build. Her birthday is May 17. During her childhood, her appearance was notably different, bearing a strong resemblance to how Yuuki Kataoka looks in the present day.
Ako was an elementary school friend of Shizuno Takakamo and Nodoka Haramura, and the three of them, along with others, spent their days happily playing mahjong at the Achiga children's club under the guidance of Harue Akado. When it came time for middle school, the group's paths diverged. Harue left to pursue a professional career, Nodoka transferred away from the area, and Ako made the deliberate choice to attend a different middle school specifically to continue playing competitive mahjong at a high level. She enrolled at Adamine Middle School, a prestigious institution known for its strong mahjong program. During this time, she managed to finish in the top sixteen of her prefecture in an individual tournament. Her academic abilities are also exceptionally high, as she gained admission to Bansei High School, an elite school with a high entrance examination difficulty, demonstrating that her dedication extends beyond the mahjong table.
In terms of personality, Ako is cheerful and outgoing, much like her friend Shizuno, but she is notably more logical and pragmatic. She is described by her former coach Harue Akado as a cunning individual. Ako is not afraid to be blunt and direct with her friends, such as when she honestly told Kuro Matsumi that her poor performance was the reason the team fell behind in a match. However, this honesty is balanced with a supportive nature, as she quickly follows up such criticism with encouragement, asserting that they simply need to win back the lost points as a team. Despite her outward confidence and bravado, she has admitted to feeling scared before important matches, revealing a more vulnerable side that she shares with her close teammates.
Ako's primary motivation is deeply rooted in her childhood friendships. She holds a strong desire to reunite with Nodoka Haramura over the mahjong table and to once again experience the fun of playing the game with her old friends. When Shizuno decides to revive the Achiga mahjong club with the goal of reaching the national championships, Ako is inspired to join the effort, even giving up her place at the mahjong powerhouse Bansei High School to return to Achiga. Her role in the story is as a key member of the revived Achiga mahjong club, typically playing in the lieutenant position. She serves as a steady and skilled player whose technical abilities form a reliable core for the team.
Her key relationships are centered on her teammates and old friends. She shares a particularly close bond with Shizuno, having known her since elementary school, and her desire to play with Nodoka again is a driving force. She is the younger sister of Nozomi Atarashi, a former Achiga player who was a teammate of Harue Akado during Achiga's golden era. This connection adds a layer of legacy to her decision to attend Achiga. Within the club, she interacts with the older Kuro Matsumi and Yuu Matsumi, often showing respect while also being comfortable enough to tease or speak plainly with them.
Throughout the story, Ako shows development by transitioning from a player who pursued mahjong seriously at a different school to one who re-embraces the joy of playing with her original friends. She learns to balance her competitive drive with the collaborative spirit needed for the team to succeed at the national level. While she is already a highly capable player, the story shows her growing by facing even stronger opponents and adapting her strategies under Harue's renewed coaching.
Ako's notable abilities in mahjong center on her speed and technical skill. Her specialty is recognizing the right moments to call tiles to complete her hand quickly, rather than waiting for a larger, more expensive hand to develop. She frequently builds her hands around open yakus such as sanshoku doujun and ikkitsuukan, supplementing them with easy han like tanyao and dora. This style makes her a much faster player than many of her opponents. She has a beautiful grasp of the flow of the game and has confidently stated that nobody can beat her at high speeds. While many other players in the series rely on supernatural or highly unusual abilities, Ako is noted as being one of the most skilled players in terms of fundamental, orthodox mahjong. Commentators within the story have noted that she is likely Achiga's most skilled player in terms of basic technique, but she is often overlooked because her teammates possess more flashy and unique powers.
