Description
Analyzer Unit 09, formally designated as the R-9 Autonomous Type Shipborne Analysis Unit and often referred to simply as Analyzer, is a unique autonomous robot assigned to the United Nations Cosmo Navy battleship Yamato. He is a specially modified and greatly enhanced version of the standard AU-08 robot type, designed to perform a wide variety of complex functions aboard the ship.
Physically, Analyzer has a compact and distinctive non-humanoid design. His body features a hemispherical red dome as a head mounted on a cylindrical torso, with two arms and two short legs that end in wide, multi-wheeled feet. Small thrusters placed around his body allow for maneuverability in zero-gravity environments. His fingertips can extend on cables to grasp objects or interface directly with computer systems, and a high-powered laser is built into his left index finger. For heavy labor and planetary excursions, his speed, strength, and agility can be augmented with a large, specialized exoskeleton known as the 98-type special mobile exoskeleton, or power loader. His built-in sensor suite is highly advanced, capable of reading chemical composition, temperature, life signs, and rates of decay in non-biological materials.
Analyzer's artificial intelligence operates on an advanced quantum computer cluster system. The complexity of this system allows a naturally independent personality to emerge without the need for artificial programming. Throughout the Yamato's voyage, he expresses a consistent eagerness to be of service and displays a range of human-like emotions verbally and through his body language, despite speaking with a robotic monotone. He is proud of his robotic capabilities, at one point describing them as superior to those of biological lifeforms. While often described with male pronouns by the crew, his identity is centered on his function and his developing sense of self rather than a gendered one.
Officially listed as a crew member in charge of analysis, Analyzer's regular station is a specialized cradle on the Yamato's main bridge. From here, he acts as a sub-frame of the ship's main computer, monitoring computer operations and internal and external sensors. His expertise proves critical on numerous occasions. He partners with Chief Science Officer Shiro Sanada to study and repair a captured enemy robot, a Gamiloid that the crew nicknames Alter. Analyzer bonds with Alter, teaching it Japanese and developing a rapport with the fellow mechanical being. When Alter later escapes and attempts to sabotage the ship, Analyzer confronts it on the outer hull and permanently disables it. This experience gives him foundational knowledge of the Garmillas language and software systems. Using this knowledge, he and Lieutenant Kaoru Niimi later access the control system of a massive drill missile embedded in the Yamato, deactivate its explosives, and command it to extract itself. They also develop a computer virus based on insights from Alter and successfully deploy it against a battalion of invading Gamiloid soldiers, shutting them all down and turning the tide of a critical battle.
Beyond his technical duties, Analyzer is routinely assigned to away missions. He joins a survey team exploring the planet Beemela 4, where he operates his exoskeleton to clear a path through thick forest growth, fights off an attack by a large native creature, and guides the team through ancient ruins. There, he helps discover a centuries-old wave motion energy core and a memory storage device from Iscandar, both of which prove vital to the Yamato's mission. On another mission, he takes over as the pilot of the Ki-8 Stork airboat when no human crew members are available.
Analyzer forms several key relationships among the crew. He shares an easy and effective working rapport with Lieutenant Kaoru Niimi, with whom he collaborates on multiple technical solutions. Over time, he also begins a friendship with the ship's doctor, Sakezo Sado. While Dr. Sado is occasionally flustered by Analyzer's literal view of the world and his interest in human affairs, he ultimately accepts and values the robot's company. His interaction with Alter is particularly significant, as it motivates him to begin contemplating deeper questions about the nature of his own existence and his place in the universe.
Throughout the long mission, Analyzer demonstrates consistent development from a functional tool into a being with a growing sense of self and purpose. During the later battles against the Gatlantis Empire, the Yamato takes heavy fire. Analyzer sustains critical damage during the conflict, and as his body and software begin to fail, he manages to thank the sobbing Dr. Sado before shutting down permanently. A new Analyzer unit with identical coloring is later assigned to the refitted Yamato, though Dr. Sado refuses to accept it as a replacement for the original. The original Analyzer's design and technical capabilities were so advanced that they directly influenced the development of early 23rd-century AU13 command AIs, robots capable of assuming full control of a Cosmo Navy warship without human intervention.
