Description
Gul Ditz is a senior officer in the Great Imperial Garmillas Astro Fleet, holding the rank of Admiral and serving as the supreme commander of the empire's space forces. He is 55 years old in Earth-equivalent years during the events of 2199. Ditz was born into a family with a long and proud legacy of military service, a heritage he instills in his daughter, Merda Ditz, from a young age. He is a thoughtful and calm individual who typically speaks and acts with a measured demeanor, carefully considering all available information before making decisions. This gives him a relaxed but often skeptical temperament. Ditz is fundamentally a moderate who supports a humane and responsible approach to leadership, which puts him at odds with more extreme and brutal elements within the Garmillas hierarchy.

His central motivation is to serve the Garmillas Empire honorably, but his deep-seated sense of duty conflicts with the corrupt and oppressive nature of the regime under Leader Abelt Desler. He becomes increasingly uncomfortable with the political infighting that dominates the capital and is horrified by the violent crackdowns on civilian populations orchestrated by Director Hydom Gimleh of the Imperial Guard. Despite his loyalty, Ditz is falsely accused of conspiring to assassinate Leader Desler, largely because he was one of the few high-ranking officers aware of the leader's travel plans. He is subsequently arrested, stripped of his command, and imprisoned on the penal colony of Leptapoda, where he awaits execution.

Ditz's role in the story transforms from that of a loyal, if uneasy, servant of the empire to a key leader of the rebel faction in the Garmillas Civil War. Following his liberation from Leptapoda during a riot orchestrated by his daughter and other loyalist officers, he assumes command of the uprising. He later becomes a central figure in the anti-Desler movement, known as the Ditz faction, and after the fall of Desler's regime, he is formally reinstated as Supreme Commander of the Astro Fleet by the new provisional government.

Key relationships define his position within the empire. The high regard for his family's legacy informs his caring but somewhat detached relationship with his daughter, Merda Ditz, where the two often rely on military protocol rather than open warmth. He shares a strong, positive relationship with fellow moderates like General Elk Domel and Minister Welte Talan, with whom he discusses his concerns about the government's direction. Conversely, he is openly at odds with the brash and ambitious Field Marshal Herm Zoellik and the brutal Director Hydom Gimleh, whose extreme methods and political maneuvering he despises.

Throughout the story, Gul Ditz shows significant development. He begins as a pragmatic and powerful figure who values stability but harbors silent doubts. The experience of being betrayed, wrongly imprisoned, and witnessing the true nature of the Desler regime radicalizes him into an active revolutionary. He successfully transitions from being a prisoner to a top military commander in a new government, demonstrating his resilience and commitment to a better future for his people.

As a commander, Ditz is considered careful but brilliant. He is known for never underestimating his enemies and for studying their tactics thoroughly before engaging in combat. He possesses considerable administrative and operational authority, as all Garmillas naval units deployed for outer-space operations fall under his command. This includes the fleets of General Domel and the dimensional submarine UX-01. Notably, his authority does not extend to the homeland defense fleets or the Imperial Guard's forces, which operate outside his jurisdiction.
