Description
Gremt Goer is a Major General in the Imperial Gamilas Defense Force and serves as the Galactic Theater Operations Commander for much of the Great Gamilas War against Earth. His age is equivalent to 47 years by Earth standards. Goer's position and authority are largely attributed not to military brilliance, but to his successful cultivation of a powerful patron: Imperial Marshal Herm Zoellick. By ingratiating himself with Zoellick, Goer secured his high-ranking command and became a prominent member of the Zoellick faction within the imperial military hierarchy.
Goer is defined by a personality that blends sycophantic ambition with cowardly self-preservation. Toward his superiors, especially Leader Abelt Desler and Marshal Zoellick, he displays an obsequious and overly eager demeanor, constantly seeking to curry favor and credit for any success. This behavior, however, is viewed with undisguised annoyance by Desler, who finds his fawning grating, even if Goer himself remains oblivious to the leader's disdain. His loyalty to Desler is genuine and intense, bordering on zealous worship. This stands in stark contrast to his relationship with Zoellick, whom Goer flatters solely for personal advancement, feeling no true allegiance to him whatsoever.
In sharp contrast to his behavior with superiors, Goer is arrogant, dismissive, and ruthlessly exploitative toward his subordinates. He holds a deep-seated prejudice against second-class Gamilas citizens, such as Colonel Schultz and his crew, whom he openly refers to as an inferior race and looks down upon from his position of power. He has a well-documented pattern of claiming the achievements of his officers as his own while shifting all blame for failures onto them. When facing personal danger, Goer's primary instinct is to flee, as demonstrated when he orders his own flagship to warp away from a dimensional rift, abandoning his fleet and crew to destruction without issuing a retreat order. His command abilities are considered average at best, and his repeated strategic failures, including the dismissal of critical reports about the Earth battleship Yamato, contribute directly to his professional downfall.
Goer's primary motivation is the preservation and advancement of his own status. He is desperate to prove his worth to the empire, not out of a sense of duty, but to protect the power and privileges he has acquired. This desperation drives him to take personal command of his fleet to hunt the Yamato after his political patron threatens him with dismissal. His actions are consistently geared toward self-aggrandizement and self-defense, making him a quintessentially opportunistic figure within the Gamilas high command.
His role in the story is that of an incompetent and self-serving antagonist whose failures inadvertently aid the Yamato's journey. Initially positioned as the superior officer for the forces engaging the Yamato in the solar system, his failure to take Schultz's reports seriously sets the stage for the Earth ship's early breakthroughs. After a series of blunders, including a failed operation personally devised by Leader Desler, Goer is demoted from commander to deputy and replaced by the far more capable General Admiral Elk Domel. Following Domel's arrest, Goer temporarily regains command. He later seizes an opportunity to shoot and kill Marshal Zoellick, denouncing him as a traitor when Desler miraculously reveals himself to be alive. After the fall of the Gamilas homeworld's government, Goer demonstrates his ultimate loyalty by disobeying orders to return and instead leading a small fleet of 30 loyal warships to rejoin the exiled Desler. This decision leads directly to his final battle, where he is tasked with cornering the Yamato for Desler's flagship. During the engagement, he refuses to surrender to an arrest order from the new government and is killed when his own flagship is destroyed by torpedoes from the dimensional submarine UX-01, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Wolf Flakken. In his final moments, he rages against his enemy, shouting his own name in a last, desperate declaration of self-importance.
