Description
Ensign Akira Yamamoto, who also goes by the nickname Rei, is a fighter pilot in the United Nations Cosmo Navy serving aboard the space battleship Yamato. She is a Marsnoid, born in Arcadia City on Mars in 2179, a heritage that gives her the distinctive red eyes characteristic of Martian natives. Her early life was marked by tragedy and displacement. Following the outbreak of the Second Inner Planetary War, her family was forced to evacuate Mars and resettle on Earth. Soon after, most of her family was killed during the initial Garmillas planet bombings that devastated the planet, leaving only her and her older brother, Akio Yamamoto, as survivors. Her brother, a recon pilot, became a close friend of fellow pilot Saburo Kato before being killed in action during the Second Battle of Mars in 2198. Before his departure, Akio gave Akira a red pendant, which became her most treasured possession and a symbol of her loss.
Personality wise, Akira is defined by a cool and passionate demeanor. She is a strong-willed and bold individual who can come across as aggressive or wild, having fought her way up from a difficult position. Beneath her tough exterior, however, she possesses a gentle heart. Early in her service, her motivations are heavily driven by a desire for vengeance against the Garmillas for her brother's death. This drive leads her to be reckless, as seen when she steals a fighter to join a battle, but it is tempered by exceptional skill. As the story progresses, she begins to move beyond her need for revenge, a journey that is catalyzed by her interactions with others, including a Garmillan officer named Melda Ditz.
Akira's formal role aboard the Yamato initially was as a member of the accounting department. Despite her request to join the fighter squadron, she was instead assigned to logistics, a decision influenced by Saburo Kato, who felt a deep sense of responsibility for her brother's death and wished to protect her from a similar fate. Her true talent could not be contained. During a Garmillan attack on the Saturnian moon Enceladus, she stole an advanced Cosmo Zero fighter and demonstrated remarkable piloting ability by destroying several enemy tanks. Following this act of insubordination, she personally requested a transfer from Tactical Officer Susumu Kodai, who recognized her skill and successfully petitioned for her to join the squadron. She then became a valuable member of the Yamato's fighter wing, flying as Kodai's wingman and taking part in key operations, most notably Operation M2 at Pluto where her sharp eyes helped uncover the real Garmillan base hidden behind an artificial aurora.
Her key relationships significantly shape her character. Her bond with Susumu Kodai is professional and familial; he acts as her mentor and supporter, and she comes to see him as a figure similar to her late brother. Her dynamic with Saburo Kato is fraught with tension and unspoken care; he tries to keep her from harm out of guilt and a desire to protect her, while she resents his overprotectiveness but ultimately understands his grief. One of her most significant developments comes when she meets Melda Ditz, a Garmillan pilot. Initially hostile, viewing all Garmillas through the lens of her personal loss, her interactions with Melda force her to confront her prejudices and begin to see the enemy as individuals, leading to a gradual softening of her worldview.
Throughout the voyage to Iscandar, Akira develops from a grief-stricken and vengeful ensign into a more composed and reliable officer. Her experiences in combat and her personal encounters with the enemy help her channel her raw emotion into a professional sense of duty. Following the Great Garmillas War, she is transferred to the Lunar Air Corps, where she becomes a squadron leader and training instructor, demonstrating her growth into a leadership role. She later rejoins the Yamato during the Gatlantis Campaign and continues to serve, eventually commanding the ship's fighter squadron.
As a pilot, Akira is extraordinarily talented. She is capable of piloting the advanced Cosmo Zero with exceptional proficiency. Her notable abilities include keen observational skills and sharp eyesight, allowing her to spot critical details and enemy positions in the heat of battle. Her combat instincts are unparalleled, enabling her to perform effectively even when stealing an unfamiliar fighter under fire. The character of Akira Yamamoto in Star Blazers 2199 represents a significant reimagining, changing the original series' male character into a female pilot whose personal journey of loss, vengeance, and eventual growth is central to her role in the story.
