Description
Kirō Mekama holds the position of the number ten Referee within the Kakerou organization. He is a character whose actions are deeply rooted in a profound sense of conviction and a personal history marked by intellectual isolation. In appearance, Mekama is recognized by his long, somewhat unkempt dirty blonde hair and his notably bulbous, dead eyes. These eyes are often highlighted as a physical trait that emphasizes his intense fixation on his own beliefs, while his face generally remains emotionless, betraying little of his inner thoughts.
From a young age, Mekama was a gifted child. He found that everything came to him with such ease that the world around him felt boring and contrived. Because he could master any task without effort, he never bothered to cultivate a dream or an ambition, as most pursuits seemed utterly pointless. This fundamental boredom shaped his personality until a pivotal encounter with Sadakuni Ikki. Meeting Sadakuni allured Mekama in a way nothing else had; for the first time, he became aware of a way of thinking and an existence that made his own feel insignificant. This discovery captivated him and gave his life a new direction, as he found purpose in supporting Sadakuni's path.
In his role as a Referee, Mekama is not a neutral arbiter. He served as a personal referee for Sadakuni, actively aiding him in using foul play and cheating during their previous gambling matches. His bias is most evident during the Hangman Game, where he offers advice to Sadakuni and belittles the protagonist Madarame Baku. This partiality draws the suspicion of other Kakerou officials, including Yakou Hikoichi and Nowa Mitoshi, who suspect that Mekama has been helping Sadakuni cheat. When confronted directly by Yakou over this possible bias, Mekama is infuriated by the accusation. His response is swift and definitive, as he challenges Yakou to a ranking battle, a formal duel with deadly stakes.
The ranking battle results in Mekama's loss, and following the rules of such a confrontation, his life is forfeit. His death is carried out by hanging, and the very frame intended for Madarame Baku is used for his execution. It is during his final moments, while being hanged, that Mekama witnesses the complete collapse of his life's purpose. He sees Sadakuni Ikki abandon the very conviction that had so allured him, rendering everything Mekama had worked for and believed in utterly pointless. This final realization adds a profound layer of tragedy to his end.
Beyond his central relationship with Sadakuni, Mekama has other connections within Kakerou. Side stories reveal that he was good friends with Kadokura Yuudai, another referee, with the two sharing the affectionate nicknames of Meka and Kaddochi. He also has a brief but notable interaction with the main character, who mockingly refers to him as Kitarou-kun. This is a direct comparison based on their similar appearances and the likeness between Mekama's name and that of the titular character from GeGeGe no Kitarou. The character shows a different fate depending on the adaptation, as his ranking battle and subsequent death do not occur in the original video animation. Despite his relatively brief appearance, Mekama serves as a crucial figure representing the intense personal loyalties and the rigid, life-or-death codes that govern the referees of Kakerou.
