TV-Series
Description
Flappie, known as Torippii Sorano in the original Japanese version, is a main character in the Shimajiro series and a kindergartner at Challenge Kindergarten. He is a pastel green parakeet with distinctive red, yellow, and light blue feathers on his head, as well as yellow and light blue feathers on his lower back. He has a yellow beak and orange talons, and he typically wears a signature red and white striped bow around his neck. During the Wow! series, his outfit consists of a dark blue shirt with white stripes and grey pants, switching to a white shirt with blue stripes and dark blue pants for summer, sometimes accessorized with a sailor cap.
In terms of personality, Flappie is best described as playful and quirky. He is a goofball who enjoys joking around, talking frequently, and he tends to be quite loose-lipped. Despite his talkative and fun-loving nature, he can be indecisive when faced with important matters, a trait compounded by a notably poor sense of direction. He has an aspiration to become a singer and loves singing, yet he remains ironically tone-deaf. He has a pronounced fear of ghosts and dislikes bell peppers as well as quiet places. His favorite food is takoyaki, and he has a strong interest in airplanes and maintaining a stylish appearance.
Flappie's motivations are largely driven by his friendships and his desire to support those around him. His role in the story is that of a loyal and supportive friend, often providing comic relief while also demonstrating a sensitive side, particularly when his own abilities are challenged. His most important relationship is with Shimajiro, whom he considers his best friend, and he maintains close bonds with other main characters such as Mimirin, Ramurin, and Nyakkii. He lives with his parents, his grandmother, and his three younger siblings, making him the eldest of four children and giving him the largest family among the main characters.
Flappie experiences notable development in episodes that focus on his insecurities. In one storyline, he temporarily loses his ability to fly, which leads him to feel deeply embarrassed and consider running away from his friends. This challenge arises from a relatable cause: he had stayed up late doing puzzles and skipped breakfast, resulting in exhaustion that affected his flying. With the encouragement and support of his friends, who reminded him of his many positive qualities beyond flying, he regained his confidence and his ability to fly, learning a valuable lesson about self-care and the importance of his friendships.
Flappie possesses several notable abilities. As a bird, he has the natural ability to fly and can understand and communicate with non-anthropomorphic birds. In certain films, he has demonstrated the extraordinary power to grow into a giant parrot, allowing him to give his friends a flying ride. His birthday is on January 1st, which coincides with New Year's Day, and his blood type is O.
