Description
Felipe Segundo is a middle-aged man who serves as the Chancellor of Tres España and the Student Council President of the Alcalá de Henares academy, a prison school that governs the nation. Despite holding the highest political and military rank in his country, he presents himself as a pathetic and timid figure, often shirking his duties in favor of menial tasks like sweeping floors or buying groceries, much to the frustration of his subordinates. This behavior has earned him a reputation as a worn-out middle-aged man and a saggy loser, though this appearance is a deliberate facade.
His background is defined by profound loss. During the reenactment of the historical Battle of Lepanto, Felipe lost his wife, his children, and all of his friends. As the sole survivor of his unit, he was hailed as a hero, but the event left him broken and without a sense of purpose. This tragedy is the root of his self-deprecating personality and his genuine hatred for war, even though his position as a Testament Union leader forces him to remain involved with it. He often calls himself a loser, reflecting his survivor's guilt and low self-worth.
Underneath his unassuming exterior, however, Felipe is a highly competent and versatile tactician with excellent analytical skills. He is fiercely loyal and possesses a hidden but powerful resolve to protect Tres España from decline. His primary motivation throughout the second season is to reverse his nation's fading fortunes, even if it costs him his life. To this end, he launches the reenactment of the Battle of the Armada against England, hiring the mercenary Musashi to initiate the conflict. His plan is to sacrifice himself by scuttling his flagship, the Super Blessing Fleet, using his death as collateral to secure a future for Tres España.
His most significant relationship is with his vice president, Juana. Juana frequently scolds him for his pathetic public behavior and often performs his political duties on his behalf. However, their bond is much deeper. During the Battle of Lepanto, Felipe rescued a young half-elf girl, an act that defied the strong racial discrimination against half-elves in Tres España. This girl was Juana, and they have maintained a connection through letters ever since. Despite his feelings, Felipe tries to deny this connection and push Juana away, intending to leave the nation in her hands after his planned death. The narrative hints at a complicated and possibly romantic future for them, complicated by the historical fact that their inherited names, Juana II and Felipe II, are siblings.
Throughout the story, Felipe develops from a man resigned to death and obsessed with his past failure into someone who chooses to live. When he attempts to commit suicide to save his nation during the Battle of Armada, he is stopped by Juana and his other colleagues, who refuse to let him sacrifice himself alone. Reinforced by his crew and their reinterpretation of his commands, he ultimately abandons his suicidal plan and joins forces with others to fight against a divine attack, showing a renewed will to survive and lead. As a dual-wielding individual, he simultaneously holds the historical names of King Philip II of Spain and Yoshinaga Ouchi, which accounts for his immense positional authority and strategic weight in the world's history reenactments. He commands the powerful Super Blessing Fleet and engages in a fierce special attack battle against the Musashi, showcasing his masterful command of aerial ship warfare.
