TV-Series
Description
Hinata Hidaka is a supporting character who appears in the second anime season, Haganai NEXT. She is an eighteen-year-old senior student at St. Chronica's Academy and hails from a noble family. Upon her introduction, she serves as the Student Council President, a position she has held for two consecutive terms. Hinata is highly regarded by both underclassmen and her peers, a popularity that has led to her being elected to the student council presidency multiple times. Her family background is notable for its connection to one of the series' main characters, as she is revealed to be the elder sister of Yozora Mikazuki. Following their parents' divorce, the sisters were separated, with Hinata living with their father and Yozora staying with their mother.
Hinata's personality is characterized by her kindness, helpfulness, and industrious nature, qualities that make her beloved throughout the school. Yozora, despite her personal disdain for Hinata, acknowledges that her older sister is reliable and never turns down a request, even with a demanding schedule as president. Kodaka Hasegawa notes that Hinata possesses a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and that her voice has a particular charm. She has a sharp intuition, quickly seeing through to a person's true character as she does with Kodaka, disregarding the school's collective misconception of him as a delinquent. Hinata is fearless in her convictions, expressing clear dislike for those who prejudge others based on outward appearances and showing no concern for her own reputation being tarnished by associating with someone like Kodaka. A key trait that defines her is a strong sense of confidence, a quality that distinguishes her from other characters like Yozora, and she genuinely enjoys interacting with and helping other people.
Hinata's primary motivation stems from her desire to be of service to the student body. As president, she dedicates her efforts to the benefit of the school and its students, and she finds personal fulfillment in this role. On a more personal level, she is deeply motivated to reconcile with her estranged younger sister, Yozora. Despite Yozora's open hostility and refusal to acknowledge their relationship, referring to Hinata with the disdainful nickname King Lear, Hinata remains fond of her sister and is grateful for any form of interaction between them, such as when she is assigned to be tutored by Yozora.
In the story, Hinata acts as a catalyst for the main character, Kodaka Hasegawa. She encounters him while he is assisting her vice-president, Aoi Yusa, with menial tasks. Recognizing his willingness to help others, she promptly offers him a position on the student council as the general affairs manager. While Kodaka declines the formal offer out of concern for the council's reputation, he agrees to continue helping with physical labor for a week. This period of absence from his own club, the Neighbor's Club, creates significant tension and serves as a major plot point in the final episodes of NEXT. Her role is primarily to provide a contrast to the other female characters, representing an easy-going and socially confident figure.
The most significant relationship for Hinata is with Yozora Mikazuki, her younger sister. This relationship is strained due to their family's past, with Yozora bearing a bitter resentment while Hinata earnestly wishes to bridge the gap between them. Within the student council, she is a tolerant and good-natured superior to Aoi Yusa, who often treats her coldly. Hinata is not bothered by this and continues to cooperate well with her. She develops a positive and understanding rapport with Kodaka Hasegawa, whose true nature she recognizes instantly. She is shown to be somewhat disappointed when he refuses her job offer, but remains pleased that he still chooses to help. While it is never made explicit if she has romantic feelings for him, the two share a clear mutual understanding and are on excellent terms.
Hinata does not undergo significant personal development within the scope of her appearance, as she is a fully realized and confident figure who instead influences the development of others, particularly Kodaka, forcing him to confront his own avoidant behavior. Regarding notable abilities, she is described as incredibly athletic, with strong leadership skills as demonstrated by her two-year tenure as student council president.
