Description
Agil is the in-game name of Andrew Gilbert Mills, a key supporting character within the Sword Art Online series. His nickname is a shortened derivation of his real first and middle names. In the real world, he is the Japanese-born American owner and operator of the Dicey Café, a bar and gathering place located in Tokyo. Before the SAO incident, he was a newlywed, having married his wife, Kathy, who shares his passion for gaming and helped maintain the café during his two-year absence. Agil is among the oldest of Kirito's close associates, which contributes to his role as a mature and stabilizing presence within the group.

Physically, Agil is an imposing figure, standing nearly 180 centimeters tall with a muscular, bulky build. He has a bald head, a neatly trimmed goatee, and dark complexion, often wearing small silver earrings in his left ear both in the virtual world and reality. His size and appearance can be intimidating at first glance, but this contrasts sharply with his true nature. He is known for being friendly, approachable, and remarkably generous, though he often masks his kindness behind a facade of merchant-like greed. Agil is deeply loyal and protective of his friends and those he perceives as weaker players, often acting as a reliable leader on the battlefield and a voice of reason off it. While he claims to be motivated by profit, operating under a "buy low, sell low" philosophy, he quietly reinvests most of his earnings into helping mid-level players survive and improve, a fact that speaks to his selfless and community-oriented mindset.

Agil is unique among the main characters because he successfully maintained two distinct roles within the death game of Aincrad. He was a front-line warrior and a dedicated merchant. As a fighter, he wielded a massive two-handed axe with great skill, participating in boss raids from the very first floor of Aincrad. His combat style was straightforward and powerful, relying on his high strength stat to deliver devastating blows. Despite eventually focusing on his career as a shopkeeper on the 50th floor, he kept his combat skills sharp enough to join the assault team in the critical boss battle on the 75th floor, proving that his abilities remained on par with the game's elite clearers.

His relationship with the protagonist, Kirito, is one of his most defining connections. Kirito considers Agil a trusted confidant and one of the few people with whom he can interact casually and without pretense. Agil has provided Kirito with crucial support on multiple occasions, offering him a place to stay within the game, acting as a sounding board for his plans, and providing vital information in the real world. This bond of mutual respect extends to other characters like Klein, with whom Agil shares a strong camaraderie. He is often looked up to by younger members of the group, who treat him with a degree of deference and respect his experience and wisdom.

Following the conclusion of the SAO incident, Agil's motivations shifted towards rebuilding his real-world life and repaying his wife for her years of loyalty. He returned to managing his café, which quickly became the primary meeting place and headquarters for Kirito and his friends. When Kirito received evidence that Asuna was being held in Alfheim Online, Agil was instrumental in providing him with the necessary equipment and information to mount a rescue. Later, he took on the secret but monumental task of distributing The Seed, a program that contained the core of a VRMMO world, across the internet. By doing so, he enabled the rebirth of the virtual reality gaming genre, acting as an unseen hero for the entire community.

Within the Sword Art Online: Extra Edition, Agil joins Kirito, Asuna, and their friends in a special quest within Alfheim Online. The group undertakes the Deep Sea Plunderers quest specifically to fulfill Yui's wish of seeing a whale in the virtual world. In this new virtual setting, Agil adopts the avatar of a Gnome, a race known for its affinity with earth magic and physical strength. He re-establishes his merchant business in the new Aincrad, once again providing logistical and financial support to his companions. Agil's development throughout the series is one of consistency rather than dramatic change; he remains a pillar of support, demonstrating that strength is not only about combat prowess but also about reliability, wisdom, and the quiet dedication to helping others succeed. His notable abilities extend beyond his formidable axe skills and business acumen to include Outside System Skills, such as Hypersense, which allows him to sense hostile intent, and the mastery of the Switch technique, a fundamental coordinated attack pattern.
