Description
Kraken, also known as Kraken the Abyss Lord, is a malevolent monster that appears during the original quest portion of Sword Art Online: Extra Edition. It is first encountered in disguise as an NPC named Nerakk, an elderly figure who presents Kirito and his companions with a seemingly simple task: retrieve a pearl from the depths of an underwater temple. When the pearl is delivered, the disguise falls away and the creature reveals its true form: a colossal, octopus-like horror with glowing red eyes, rectangular pupils, six large tentacles, two smaller tentacles, and a vast circular mouth filled with multiple rings of teeth hidden behind its foremost limbs.
Kraken’s primary motivation is tied to the pearl, though the exact reason it sought the object is not fully explored within the special. It serves as a sudden and overwhelming antagonist, attacking the party with powerful tentacle strikes and demonstrating a level of strength that Yui notes is far beyond any floor boss from New Aincrad. A potential bite attack from its massive maw is suggested but never actually carried out, as it is interrupted before the strike can land.
The creature has no human personality, no friendships, and no personal arc. It functions purely as a towering hostile force. Its most significant dynamic is the implied rivalry with Leviathan the Sea Lord, another immense entity of the ALfheim Online seas. Just when Kraken seems ready to overpower the group, Leviathan appears and drives the Kraken away, leaving their conflict unresolved in the episode itself. A later short story, Rainbow Bridge, expands on the vague exchange between the two lords and hints that their confrontation is part of a larger unfolding struggle within the game world. Kraken’s role in Extra Edition is therefore that of a hidden quest-giver turned fearsome boss, a creature of deception and brute force whose encounter sets the stage for a deeper, ongoing rivalry beneath the waves.
