TV Special
Description
Nerakk is a non-player character encountered in the ALfheim Online segment of the Sword Art Online: Extra Edition special. He appears as an elderly man with white hair, standing at the entrance of an undersea temple. He presents himself as a quest giver for the Deep Sea Invaders task, claiming that robbers stole a valuable pearl from him and hid it inside the temple. He asks the party of players, led by Kirito, to retrieve the pearl so he can give it to a friend.

His personality as presented to the players is that of a frail, grateful old man, but this demeanor is a deliberate deception. Nerakk is actually the disguised form of Kraken the Abyss Lord, a powerful sea monster that serves as the boss encounter for the quest. His true motivation is to recover an egg that he claims as his own, which he has disguised as the stolen pearl. He manipulates the players by appealing to their helpfulness, relying on the fact that the egg appears to be a simple treasure.

In the story, Nerakk functions as both the initial quest contact and the hidden antagonist. When the players successfully retrieve the egg and return it to him, Leafa expresses suspicion about his story. If the party chooses to refuse handing over the egg after discovering it is not a pearl, Nerakk drops his disguise and transforms into Kraken the Abyss Lord, initiating a boss battle. This transformation reveals that the quest itself is a trap set to lure adventurers into retrieving the egg for the monster.

Nerakk does not form meaningful relationships with the main characters; he interacts with them solely through his false persona. The only notable relationship is with the Kraken entity, of which he is a shape-shifted form. There is no personal development for the character, as he is a non-player character whose sole purpose is to host a specific quest encounter. His identity is static: he is a tool used by the game system to create a twist event.

His notable abilities include human-like speech, the capacity to disguise himself as a non-threatening NPC, and the power to transform into the Kraken, a colossal octopus-like creature with seven health bars. The Kraken form possesses considerable strength and durability, serving as the final challenge of the underwater quest. The transformation underscores the deceptive nature of the encounter and adds a surprise element to the otherwise straightforward retrieval mission.
