Description
Katsumi Morikawa is a supporting character in the Cardfight!! Vanguard: Asia Circuit Hen anime. He is a classmate of Aichi Sendou and a regular at the Card Capital card shop. Morikawa initially appears as a bully, stealing Aichi's Blaster Blade card and using it in a fight against Toshiki Kai in an attempt to prove himself. After Aichi defeats him in a Vanguard match, his attitude shifts and he becomes a frequent sparring partner and friend to Aichi, often hanging out at the shop.
Morikawa considers himself the strongest fighter at Card Capital and is openly boastful about his skills. In reality, he is one of the weakest deck builders in the series, largely due to his habit of loading his decks with too many grade 3 cards, which throws off their balance and consistency. Despite this flaw in deck construction, when given a well-constructed deck by someone else, he demonstrates genuine tactical ability and can hold his own against strong opponents, even pushing Aichi to his limits in practice matches. This contrast between his poor deckbuilding and his decent in-game strategic sense defines his growth as a player.
During the Asia Circuit arc, while Aichi, Kamui Katsuragi, and Misaki Tokura travel abroad to compete in international stages, Morikawa remains in Japan alongside other side characters such as Taishi Miwa. His role in this season is therefore primarily that of a background figure who continues to play Vanguard at home. His key relationships include his rivalry-turned-friendship with Aichi, his admiration for stronger players like Kai, and his friendly interactions with the rest of the Card Capital regulars.
Morikawa develops over the course of the series from a petty antagonist into a loyal and enthusiastic member of the Vanguard community. While his pride sometimes gets the better of him, he genuinely loves the game and shows increasing sportsmanship. His most notable ability is his capacity to adapt his playstyle when using a properly balanced deck, revealing a sharper understanding of tactics than his usual grade-3-heavy decks suggest.
