Description
Elena Peoples is a central character in Eureka Seven AO, serving as an IFO pilot for the private military organization Generation Bleu, specifically assigned to its elite team, Pied Piper. She pilots the RA304 Kyrie, a humanoid combat craft designed to investigate and neutralize threats from mysterious entities known as Secrets as well as the enigmatic Scub Coral. Her outward appearance is distinctive, featuring dark or tanned skin, short pink hair often styled with a hime cut, and purple eyes. Her Generation Bleu uniform is accented with neon pink highlights, reflecting her personal aesthetic. At fifteen years old, she presents as a reserved and difficult-to-read individual, often seeming detached or aloof from her surroundings.

Underneath her calm exterior lies the core of a passionate otaku, an avid enthusiast of anime, manga, and video games. Elena is almost constantly engaged with some form of media, checking her favorite websites for updates even while on deployment or during combat breaks. She has a habit of weaving famous quotes and references from anime into her everyday speech, a quirk that sets her apart as an eccentric but harmless member of the team. Her belief system is heavily influenced by this love for fiction; she frequently states that she believes in the unbelievable because the unbelievable has already happened to her, hinting at the extraordinary secrets of her past.

The mystery of Elena's background is one of the central enigmas of the story's first half. Her real name is Ellen Brooks. She was originally an ordinary American girl who lived in a region with high trapar concentration, a unique particle that enables IFO piloting. It is believed that exposure to trapar caused brain alterations that allowed her to pilot an IFO. Before coming to Generation Bleu, she was kept in a research facility in America that experimented on potential IFO pilots. She was rescued from this facility by President Blanc of Generation Bleu. However, deep layers of deception shroud her identity. It is eventually revealed that the Elena Peoples known to the team is, in fact, an impostor. The original Elena Peoples died five years prior to the main events in a Scub Burst while on a cruise. The current Elena, Ellen Brooks, assumed this dead girl's identity after her own world was turned upside down. She is also shown to be masquerading as Miller, a famous singer affiliated with Generation Bleu, leading a double life that creates a fractured sense of self, including hallucinations and potential split personality traits. The true origin of Ellen Brooks is even more extraordinary. She was saved from a Scub Burst in the Caribbean Sea in the year 1981 by Eureka, a key figure from the original Eureka Seven series. Eureka's actions teleported her through time to the year 2020, the present of Eureka Seven AO. This event led Elena to initially believe she was from Eureka's original world, though she was actually from Ao's world's recent past.

Elena's motivations are heavily tied to her fractured identity and her connection to Eureka. For much of the series, she is driven by a deep-seated confusion about who she is and a desperate need to find the truth. She is convinced that Eureka is the key to her past, as Eureka was the one who saved her. When she discovers that Eureka is real and exists in her present time, her emotional stability shatters. Her desire to find Eureka and demand answers becomes all-consuming, leading her to feel betrayed and abandoned. This emotional turmoil fuels a major turn in her role within the story. She betrays Generation Bleu, leaving Team Pied Piper in a fit of emotional instability and anger. She defects to the Allied Forces, the primary political and military rivals of Generation Bleu, taking a backup IFO with her. Her intention is to use their resources to track down Eureka, seeking either answers or revenge for the perceived abandonment and the confusing life she has been forced to live.

Key relationships define Elena's journey. Her most important connection is with the protagonist, Ao Fukai. They share a unique bond as fellow IFO pilots and children connected to the mysteries of the Scub Coral and Eureka. Their shared hallucinations and trapar-induced visions forge a deep, if initially unspoken, understanding. Her relationship with her teammate Fleur Blanc is complex and evolves significantly. While they are friends and comrades, Elena's inner turmoil creates friction. In a moment of high stress, her pent-up pressure explodes, leading her to physically lash out at Fleur. This conflict ultimately strengthens their friendship, forcing them to confront difficult truths and solidifying their reliance on one another in battle and in life. Captain Christophe Blanc is another key figure, as he was the one who brought her to Generation Bleu from the American research facility, giving her a purpose even as he remained unaware of the full depth of her secrets.

Elena undergoes a substantial character development arc that moves from mystery to betrayal and finally to acceptance. Initially presented as a quirky and competent but enigmatic pilot, the narrative slowly peels back her layers to reveal a deeply traumatized and confused individual. Her identity crisis leads to her defection, marking her lowest point as she acts out of anger and a misguided search for belonging. Her journey reaches its resolution when she confronts her true past. She learns her real name is Ellen Brooks and understands the circumstances of her time displacement. This revelation, coupled with the intervention of Ao and the real Eureka, allows her to finally let go of her constructed identity. She reconciles with the truth, is freed from the emotional shackles of her assumed identity, and returns to Generation Bleu. In the final timeline, a version of the real Elena Peoples, who was saved by the adult Ellen Brooks, becomes an IFO pilot and participates in the mission to save Ao. The mature Elena ultimately finds her place, fighting alongside her friends to protect the future.

As an IFO pilot, Elena possesses notable abilities that set her apart. Like other pilots of her generation, her brain was likely altered by growing up in a high-trapar environment, granting her the unique neural compatibility required to control an IFO. Her ability to pilot the Kyrie is exceptional, allowing her to engage high-speed combat against the powerful Secrets. Her most distinctive trait is her incredibly high affinity for trapar particles. This sensitivity makes her highly susceptible to trapar-induced hallucinations, but it also allows her to connect with these phenomena on a level others cannot. This is best demonstrated when she and Ao share the same hallucination, linking their minds and memories through the trapar-infused sand. Her combat abilities are further augmented by her quick thinking and unorthodox strategies, often influenced by the anime she obsessively watches, allowing her to predict enemy patterns or execute surprise maneuvers.
