Description
Older Sister Maid is a young human servant who works in the Demon King's mansion, where she is known only by her title, as is the case for every character in the story. She arrives at the estate as a runaway serf together with her little sister, and the two are taken in and trained to serve as maids.

Her background explains much of who she is. She was born a serf in a family of seven children, most of whom died from hunger and disease, and her family's home was burned down as part of measures to prevent the spread of illness. Treated almost like property by the lord who owned them and no longer able to endure that existence, she fled with her younger sister in search of a better life. The pair slipped into the Demon King's mansion in the human world intending to stay only for a single night, but they were discovered. Instead of being turned away, they were allowed to remain, and under the stern guidance of the Senior Maid they became assistant maids. When the sisters asked the Senior Maid to teach them how to become proper human beings, she took them on as her charges.

In appearance, Older Sister Maid is a young teenager. She has long chestnut hair usually worn in two braids over her shoulders, light brown eyes, and a classic black and white maid outfit consisting of a long black dress, a white apron, a red ribbon, and a white cap. After she leaves the mansion to travel, she wears a simpler long black dress with a red cloak.

In personality she is initially timid and constantly apologetic, with little sense of her own worth, a reflection of her life as a serf and the hardship she survived. She also worries at times about her own identity and her place in the world. As she gains education and responsibility, however, she steadily grows more confident, and beneath her quiet manner emerges a determined and persuasive young woman capable of acting on her convictions.

Her motivations develop along with her circumstances. At first she simply wants safety and a better life for herself and her sister. Through her education at the mansion and the influence of the Demon King, who teaches her and the other disciples matters of economics, agriculture, and governance, she begins to think about the wider world. She studies on her days off alongside the children of influential local families and eventually takes over much of the Demon King's paperwork and administrative duties. Over time her deepest concern becomes freedom, especially the liberation of serfs, and she comes to see ending war and understanding its root causes as part of the same struggle.

Her most significant moment in the story comes when the Demon King is away and the church moves to condemn the Demon King's human persona, the Crimson Scholar, as a heretic. Called upon to stand in as the Scholar's representative at the trial, Older Sister Maid mounts the platform and appeals to the people not to surrender the freedom granted by the spirits. Her words echo ideas of natural rights and basic human rights, and in doing so she turns the confrontation from a simple heresy accusation into a question of how kingdoms should respond to serfs seeking liberation. The southern kingdoms respond by declaring serf emancipation, and her speech becomes a catalyst for social change across the region.

Feeling responsible for having raised that cry for freedom, she later asks the Demon King for leave to depart the mansion, believing that someone who has called for freedom must act on that call. She then travels the world, at times accompanied by a fellow disciple known as the music student, and sets out to understand the origins of conflict. During her journey she meets surviving mercenaries and serves as their acting captain, overseeing the destruction of saltpeter stores so they cannot fuel further warfare, and she tells the mercenaries that people should not believe the choices set before them are fixed, since it is sometimes possible to choose both of the presented options. She eventually crosses into the demon realm, wins an audience with the Fire Dragon Grand Duke through strategic maneuvering, and negotiates for the dragon clan's treasure, the light orb, on the condition that she drive back one of the human armies. She secures the consent of the clan heads in the Blue Demon clan's territory and becomes the region's lord, and when the central church's army arrives under the Marshal Prince, she confronts him over the injustice of invading a land ruled by a human.

Her key relationships shape her growth. Her bond with her little sister is the most personal one; the two fugitives rely on each other, and her protective sense of responsibility carries over into her later actions. The Senior Maid initially looks down on the sisters, dismissing them as bugs for letting harsh circumstances control their fate rather than thinking and planning for their own futures. When the sisters ask to be taught how to live properly, however, the Senior Maid becomes their demanding mentor, and the lessons she provides give Older Sister Maid the education she needs. The Demon King, whom she serves as both mistress and teacher, supplies the intellectual foundation for her ideas about society and ultimately respects her decision to leave. Her encounters with the female magician and the music student broaden her understanding of the world and give her companions on her path.

What distinguishes Older Sister Maid is not combat ability but her intellect, her knowledge of the different lives and social classes within human society, her administrative competence, and her power as a speaker. She demonstrates considerable persuasive skill in confronting church officials and demons alike, and she shows calm strategic thinking in both political and military situations. Her development from a frightened, apologetic runaway into an educated young woman who helps set serfs free and stands against armies makes her one of the quiet driving forces of the story's political transformation.
