Description
Ayuko Oka is a seventeen-year-old second-year student at Kazamidai High School, attending the same class as the protagonist Akira Tsubaki and the enigmatic Mikoto Urabe. Her most distinctive physical traits are her diminutive stature, standing at only 143 centimeters tall, and her large, round glasses, which she requires due to significant myopia with a visual acuity of 0.1 in her right eye and 0.2 in her left. Despite her short stature, which often makes her appear younger than her age, Oka possesses a noticeably mature and well-developed figure that attracts attention from both male and female classmates. She typically wears her brown hair in a short, cropped style, complementing her youthful but charismatic presence.

In terms of personality, Oka presents a blend of responsibility and mischievous curiosity. She is a serious and reliable student who serves as the class health representative and is known for her academic excellence, often acting as a tutor for her boyfriend, Kouhei Ueno. Her demeanor is generally mature, calm, and self-possessed, allowing her to take the lead in her romantic relationship. However, she also possesses an impish and inquisitive side, demonstrating a strong desire to investigate the unusual dynamics of others, particularly those involving Mikoto Urabe. This curiosity is paired with a caring and supportive nature, as she frequently goes out of her way to help others and is protective of her friends.

Oka has been in a discreet romantic relationship with Kouhei Ueno since their first year of high school. Unlike the awkward and inexperienced Tsubaki, Oka is confident and often the dominant partner in her relationship with Ueno, guiding him both romantically and academically. Her relationship with Mikoto Urabe forms a central part of her role in the story. Initially a distant classmate, Oka becomes fascinated by Urabe after secretly witnessing the drool exchange between Urabe and Tsubaki. She actively pursues Urabe's friendship, a task made difficult by Urabe's reserved and unsocial nature. Oka eventually succeeds in befriending Urabe by sharing her homemade bento lunches and, through a series of unusual events, discovers she shares a strange bond with her that revolves around saliva.

Oka possesses a notable ability that mirrors the series' core supernatural concept. She exhibits a profound and unique sensitivity to Mikoto Urabe's saliva. This ability first manifests when she treats a scrape on Urabe's knee in the nurse's office. After sharing a drink from the same bottle, Oka discovers that the identical injury has mysteriously appeared on her own body in the same location. This connection allows Oka to physically feel Urabe's emotions and physical state. She learns to use this bond intentionally; by feeding her own saliva to Urabe, she can gauge Urabe's emotional state. For instance, she deduces that Urabe has never kissed Tsubaki because her saliva tastes overwhelmingly sweet, a flavor indicative of unfulfilled romantic yearning. Oka is also a talented cook, a skill she uses to bond with Urabe by bringing elaborately prepared bento lunches, often featuring creative items like sausage and bacon-wrapped shrimp.

Oka's role in the narrative is primarily that of a catalyst and observer. After discovering the secret of Tsubaki and Urabe's relationship, she uses her intelligence and mischievous insight to involve herself in their lives. She becomes the first real friend for the solitary Urabe, helping her navigate and deepen her relationship with Tsubaki. While not a protagonist herself, her actions and her unique saliva bond with Urabe serve as a mirror to the main couple's relationship, allowing for further exploration of the series' themes of intimacy and emotional connection. Throughout the story, she acts as an advisor and a playful instigator, using her own relationship with Ueno as a point of comparison and her strange ability as a tool for investigation.
