Description
In the anime Samurai Bride, Hanzo Hattori is a descendant of the legendary Iga ninja clan and serves as a prominent figure at Bukei Academy, where she holds the position of student council president. She is known for her unique appearance, which combines elements of a traditional ninja with a distinctive maid outfit and elegant glasses, making her one of the more recognizable students at the academy. Initially, her role in the story is that of an antagonist carrying out the student council's orders. Her primary mission involves pressuring the protagonist, Muneakira Yagyu, to vacate the Yagyu Dojo, a task she attempts to accomplish with the support of her ninja clan. However, these plans are consistently thwarted, first by the sudden intervention of Jubei Yagyu and later by changing circumstances.
In terms of personality, Hanzo presents a contrast between her authoritative title and her actual behavior. Despite being the student council president, she is notably awkward and often fails to grasp basic details about her surroundings, such as being unaware that Muneakira does not have a sister. Her personality is described as submissive with a slight masochistic streak, and she exhibits some yuri tendencies, particularly in her close relationship with Sen Tokugawa. After she inadvertently becomes one of Muneakira’s Master Samurai, she begins to show a shy and blushing side around him, indicating a shift in her personal feelings. She is deeply loyal and caring towards her friends, especially Sen, whom she has protected since childhood. This fierce loyalty was forged in her youth when she was a shy and clumsy girl who found the motivation to become stronger in order to defend the princess from bullies.
Hanzo’s motivations are deeply rooted in her duty and personal bonds. She is originally driven by her responsibilities as student council president and her loyalty to Sen Tokugawa. When Sen decides to move into the Yagyu Dojo, Hanzo chooses to accompany her, demonstrating that her allegiance to Sen overrides her initial mission. As the series progresses into the second season, Samurai Bride, she becomes troubled by a perceived inability to protect Sen, a dilemma she shares with another character, Mataemon Araki. This fear of failure motivates her to eventually form a contract with Muneakira, becoming the seventh sword princess in order to rescue Sen from a grave threat.
Her key relationships are central to her development. She shares a strong, long-standing bond with Sen Tokugawa, whom she serves and protects. Her relationship with Muneakira Yagyu is complex, evolving from an adversarial one to a romantic and contractual alliance. The accidental kiss that seals their contract is a pivotal moment, transforming her from an antagonist into one of his closest allies and a key member of his growing group of samurai. She also works alongside other samurai like Matabei Goto, especially in their shared goal of safeguarding Sen.
Throughout the series, Hanzo exhibits a clear arc of development. She begins as a somewhat inept and antagonistic figure but transitions into a reliable and caring ally. Her initial clumsiness gives way to a more mature understanding of her duties, and she confronts her own insecurities regarding her strength and ability to protect those she cares about. By the end of Samurai Bride, she has fully embraced her role as a Master Samurai, having overcome her doubts to fight alongside the others.
As a fighter, Hanzo possesses notable abilities befitting her ninja lineage. She wields a ninja sword and conceals a large number of shurikens beneath her armored skirt. In the anime, these shurikens are equipped with wires, allowing her to retrieve them after they have been thrown and even use them to bind her enemies. She is a skilled and agile combatant, embodying the stealth and precision of a ninja rather than a traditional samurai. Her glasses also grant her special skills, such as the ability to detect an opponent's power level, and in her Master Samurai form, she can use a giant scroll as a weapon that splits into three-sided shurikens.
