Description
Heidemarie W. Schnaufer is a character from Karlsland, recognized as one of the most powerful Night Witches, known in military circles as a Nachthexe. Her exceptional abilities and combat record are directly inspired by the historical night fighter pilot Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer.
Born in the town of Calw, which is located in southern Karlsland near the border with Gallia, Heidemarie comes from a family involved in the wine business. Her childhood was difficult because her magical powers manifested early, granting her an acute night vision that could see clearly by starlight. However, she was unable to control this ability, leading to debilitating sensory overload that forced her to spend most of her early years in dimly lit indoor spaces, such as her family's dark wine cellar, to avoid discomfort. This constant strain caused permanent damage to her optic nerves. At the age of ten, she was enrolled in a formal witch development institution where she learned to master her powers. While she successfully gained control and her night vision ceased to activate spontaneously, the damage to her visual neurons could not be healed even with magic, which is why she must always wear strong prescription glasses.
In terms of personality, Heidemarie is introverted and sensitive, a direct consequence of her socially isolated upbringing. She never experienced the typical childhood activities of playing with friends or simply relaxing, which has resulted in a very constrained and disciplined lifestyle. Despite this reserved exterior and poor social disposition, she harbors a surprisingly strong desire to make friends her own age, a feeling particularly directed toward her fellow Night Witches. Within her own unit, she is popular among both superiors and subordinates for her hard-working nature, her mysterious atmosphere, and the expression she constantly wears as if she is troubled, though she herself remains unaware of this admiration.
Heidemarie is a rare case of a witch possessing multiple inherent magical abilities. Alongside the standard magic radar antenna that is a characteristic feature of a Night Witch, she possesses a unique and powerful night vision ability. Her combat skills are formidable; by the end of 1944, her tally of shot-down Neuroi was nearing one hundred, a remarkable feat achieved entirely in nighttime air combat. Her flight aptitude is very high, and during her career she pioneered the use of new technologies, such as combining a Lichtenstein-type magic-antenna with a Yagi-Uda-type magic-formation, which allowed her to detect Neuroi from long distances and dramatically increased her success rate.
Her role in the story is that of a highly accomplished and respected soldier. She serves as a night-fighter air infantryman and holds the rank of Major, commanding the 4th Flying Corps of NJG1 as its Flight Lieutenant. A key milestone in her development is the goal of reaching one hundred victories, which will automatically result in her promotion to Squadron Leader, or Geschwaderkommodore, making her the youngest combat air wing commander in all of Karlsland. Key relationships include a friendship with Sanya V. Litvyak, a member of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing. The two Night Witches regularly contact each other while on their respective night patrols and have exchanged QSL cards, which are used for telecommunications among those who use magic antennas. During a large-type Neuroi attack that caused the so-called Ghost Witch Riot in St. Trond, she fought alongside other notable Karlsland witches such as Minna Wilcke, Gertrud Barkhorn, and Erica Hartmann. Heidemarie appears in supporting roles in Strike Witches: The Movie and the Operation Victory Arrow anime, as well as the manga Kimi to Tsunagaru Sora, which explores her story as the Night Ghost of St. Trond.
