Description
Julia Crichton is a central character in the Fullmetal Alchemist film The Sacred Star of Milos, serving as the primary female lead and a key figure around whom the story's conflict revolves. A spirited and resilient sixteen-year-old, she is a native of the troubled land of Milos, a valley-dwelling people who have been displaced and oppressed following the annexation of their holy land by the neighboring military nation of Creta. Now living in the squalid conditions of the valley below the Amestrian-controlled Table City, Julia has become a dedicated member of the Black Bat, a guerrilla resistance organization fighting for the independence and restoration of Milos.

Orphaned at a young age, Julia witnessed the murder of her parents, who were alchemists, an event that has profoundly shaped her resolve. She is a young woman of strong will and kindness, driven by a fierce determination to do whatever it takes to restore her nation's former glory and secure a future for her people. However, her morality is a core part of her personality; she is deeply opposed to unethical practices, particularly the creation of a Philosopher's Stone through human sacrifice, and struggles with the moral implications of the great power she desperately seeks. Her desperation for a solution to her people's suffering leads her to pursue the legendary "Sacred Star of Milos," a powerful artifact that is, in truth, a Philosopher's Stone.

Initially arrested as a smuggler, Julia's path crosses with the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, who are drawn into the conflict in Table City. Within Milosian society, she is a significant figure as one of the few individuals capable of practicing alchemy, a skill she uses in the fight for independence. Her abilities are distinctive, focusing on healing, a form of alchemy unfamiliar to the Elric brothers. She typically performs this alchemy using a unique transmutation circle printed on paper, which allows her to heal small wounds, though not without difficulty. Beyond her alchemical skills, Julia is exceptionally athletic and resourceful, capable of scaling sheer cliffs with ease and handling firearms, knives, and the gliding equipment of the Black Bats with proficiency.

A central element of Julia's character is her deep, loving connection to her older brother, Ashley Crichton, who she believed to have died alongside her parents. Her personal journey is heavily defined by her relationship with him. She initially does not get along with a man calling himself Melvin Voyager, who claims to be her brother but whose personality has drastically changed. She envies the close friendship the Elric brothers share, a bond she longs to have with her own sibling. The story's pivotal revelation is that this man is an impostor, a military officer named Atlas who has stolen Ashley's face and a portion of a map branded onto his body. The map, placed on Julia and her brother by their parents, is key to locating the Philosopher's Stone. Eventually, the real Ashley Crichton, now a disfigured officer from Creta, re-emerges, but his intentions have become twisted, seeking to use the stone's power for his own destructive ends. This forces Julia into a reluctant but necessary final confrontation with the brother she loves.

Julia's most significant development occurs in the film's climax. Upon learning the horrifying truth about the Philosopher's Stone's creation, she experiences a mental breakdown but resolves to stop the plan. In a desperate act to gain the power to fight, she swallows the completed Philosopher's Stone, which grants her immense abilities, including control over lightning, water, ice, and large-scale earth manipulation strong enough to halt a flow of molten lava. Her healing abilities are also dramatically enhanced. In the final battle, after her brother is mortally wounded, Julia performs a selfless act of human transmutation. Using the remaining power of the Stone and sacrificing her own left leg, she passes through the Gate of Truth to save her brother's life, restoring his face and healing his grievous wounds at a permanent cost to herself. This act demonstrates her ultimate commitment to her brother's life over her own physical well-being, solidifying her development from a desperate revolutionary to a character who understands the true price of power and chooses a path of personal sacrifice for love. After the revolution succeeds and the Milosians reclaim their holy land, Julia bids farewell to the Elric brothers, choosing to remain and dedicate herself to the difficult work of rebuilding her nation.
