Description
Ashleigh Crichton is a central figure in the story of Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos. He is the older brother of Julia Crichton and the son of alchemists who were researching the legendary Sanguine Star, a type of Philosopher's Stone, in the troubled region of Milos.

From a young age, Ashleigh’s life was marked by tragedy and persecution. The people of Milos forced his family out of their home, and they later sought protection from a man named Atlas, the Chief of Security. This trust was shattered when Atlas murdered Ashleigh's parents. Ashleigh witnessed the attack and was himself brutally assaulted; Atlas stripped the skin from the boy's face and a patch of skin under his arm that contained a tattooed map of the Milos ruins. Left for dead and grievously wounded, Ashleigh survived by finding and swallowing a Sanguine Star that his parents had hidden. Even with its power, he was unable to heal his disfigured face.

Driven by a desire for vengeance and justice, Ashleigh dedicated his life to a single-minded path. He infiltrated the military of the neighboring country of Creta, adopting the masked alias of "Herschel" and eventually rising to the rank of Colonel. His personality became hardened and ruthless, shaped by years of pain and resentment. His primary motivation was to find and kill Atlas, who had grafted Ashleigh's stolen face onto his own to deceive others. He also harbored a deep and burning hatred for the people of Milos, holding them responsible for exiling his family and setting the stage for the tragedy that followed.

In the story, Ashleigh operates from the shadows for much of the film. As "Herschel," he leads Cretan forces and commands a unit of wolf-like chimeras. He uses his military power to keep his younger sister, Julia, under surveillance, ensuring she is protected until Atlas inevitably comes for her half of the family's map. When Atlas finally makes his move, Ashleigh confronts him and personally kills him, achieving his long-sought revenge. However, his rage does not end there. Ashleigh decides to continue Atlas’s destructive rampage, intending to annihilate the people of Milos as retribution for their past mistreatment of his family.

His key relationships are defined by this trauma. His relationship with his sister, Julia, is deeply complex. He loves her and has gone to great lengths to protect her from afar, but his overwhelming desire for revenge threatens to consume him and leads him into direct conflict with her. The intervention of the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, also plays a crucial role, as Ed directly confronts Ashleigh's warped worldview.

Ashleigh’s character arc moves from a tragic victim to a vengeful antagonist. He is ultimately stopped not by his enemies, but by his sister. Julia uses the power of a Sanguine Star she has swallowed to overwhelm his power, mortally wounding him in the process. In a final act of love and sacrifice, Julia uses the remainder of her power to heal Ashleigh, restoring the connection between his body and soul and even regenerating his lost face. He survives and awakens in a hospital, but he chooses to leave without saying goodbye to Julia, returning to the Cretan military and donning his white mask once more, taking one of the earrings they shared as a silent sign that he still cares.

As an alchemist, Ashleigh is highly skilled and resourceful. His most notable ability comes from consuming a Sanguine Star, which grants him immense power, far beyond that of a normal alchemist, but at a great personal cost. He is also a capable strategist and leader within the Cretan military, able to command and deploy chimera forces effectively.
