Description
Kyōnosuke Kaoru is a physical education teacher at Hakuo Academy. He is a supporting character in the anime Hayate the Combat Butler! Heaven Is a Place on Earth, where he appears during the summer vacation events alongside the main cast. Kaoru is a man in his late twenties, still single and without a romantic partner, a fact that occasionally weighs on him. His most defining trait is his obsessive hobby of building Gundam plastic models, known as Gunpla. He is frequently seen assembling or painting these models in the staff room or during his lunch breaks, and he devotes a large portion of his income to purchasing new kits. This habit often leaves him short on money, prompting him to borrow from his colleague and childhood friend, Yukiji Katsura.
Kaoru’s personality is laid-back and somewhat distracted, with his model-building taking priority over many other responsibilities. He is financially irresponsible and prone to impulsive spending on his hobby. Despite his easygoing exterior, he harbors genuine romantic feelings for Yukiji, a sentiment that has persisted since their childhood. However, he is too timid or hesitant to act on these feelings, and his attempts to express them are rarely straightforward. This unrequited affection forms the central emotional thread of his character, providing a subtle contrast to his otherwise comedic preoccupations.
In the story of Heaven Is a Place on Earth, Kaoru joins the group of characters who travel to the Nishizawa family’s countryside vacation home. His role is largely that of comic relief, with his Gunpla obsession and interactions with Yukiji providing lighthearted moments. He does not drive the main plot, which focuses on Hayate and Nagi being trapped in a mysterious amusement park, but he remains present as part of the ensemble.
Kaoru’s key relationship is with Yukiji Katsura. They have known each other since childhood, and he often turns to her for loans and casual company. Her cheerful, somewhat chaotic nature contrasts with his more passive demeanor, and their dynamic is one of familiar bickering tinged with underlying warmth. Among the other faculty and students of Hakuo Academy, Kaoru is a familiar but unremarkable presence, respected as a teacher but not particularly distinguished.
His notable abilities are limited to his physical education duties and an encyclopedic knowledge of Gunpla, which he takes very seriously. He possesses no supernatural or combat skills, setting him apart from the more extraordinary characters in the series. Over the course of the film and the wider anime, Kaoru does not undergo significant personal development; his crush on Yukiji remains unresolved, and his financial habits stay unchanged. He exists as a consistent, humorous fixture within the Hakuo Academy setting.
