Description
Mizuki Tohno is a resident of the relocated village of Kitanosawa, where she works at the local lodge. She belonged to a close-knit group of five childhood friends who reunite after eight years during the village's anniversary festival. Beneath her calm and helpful exterior lies a deep personal tragedy: eight years before the film’s events, she had a heated argument with her younger sister, Natsuki, and pushed her, causing Natsuki to stumble into the path of a car driven by Keisuke Yamao, resulting in Natsuki’s death. That confrontation was witnessed by the young Touma Tachihara. Fearing exposure and having no intention to kill, Mizuki chased Touma to silence him, which led to him falling from a cliff and entering an eight-year coma. In the present, she lives with the constant dread that Touma’s returning memories will reveal her role in the chain of events.
Mizuki’s personality is marked by a conflict between her outward sociability and the guilt and fear that drive her actions. She is capable of decisive, even forceful, measures to protect her secret: she possesses a hunting rifle license and demonstrates notable marksmanship, later using it to wound Keisuke and save Conan. She also suffers from claustrophobia and a fear of dark, confined spaces, a detail that becomes important during the story’s climax. Her interpersonal relationships are complex. Shogo Hikawa had romantic feelings for her and proposed marriage, but she refused; he remained devoted to her until his death. A mutual, unspoken affection exists between her and Takehiko Muto, who vows to wait for her after her arrest. In the story, Mizuki initially appears as a friendly local host, but as the investigation unfolds, she is revealed to be the shadowy figure who has been pursuing Touma and the children. She does not plan the large-scale bombings – those are the work of Keisuke Yamao – but her actions contribute to the danger. Ultimately, she confesses to her past, accepts responsibility, and is taken into police custody, with Takehiko promising to wait for her release. Her arc shows a person driven by a moment of anger and subsequent fear, whose remorse coexists with a desperate attempt to preserve her secret.
