Description
Jason Wyngarde, known as Mastermind, is a mutant who leads the Inner Circle, a secret organization that appears in the later episodes of the Marvel Anime X-Men series. His background before the events of the series is not elaborated upon, but he is depicted as a cunning and ambitious figure who commands a group of loyal followers. Mastermind possesses the ability to create telepathic illusions that affect all five senses, allowing him to craft scenarios so realistic that victims cannot distinguish them from reality. He can project these illusions into the minds of individuals or entire groups, and he uses this power to manipulate and control others for his own ends.
Mastermind’s personality is marked by a cold, calculating nature and a deep hunger for power. He is confident in his abilities and enjoys psychological manipulation, often toying with his prey. His primary motivation is to gain supreme control, specifically over the Phoenix Force, which he sees as a limitless source of power. He believes that by dominating such a force, he can cement his own authority and overcome any opposition.
In the story, Mastermind serves as the primary antagonist during the climactic episodes. He captures the X-Men and uses his illusions to force a young mutant named Takeo to restrain them with his energy powers. Mastermind summons the Four Pillars of the Inner Circle to engage the X-Men in battle while he torments Cyclops with a nightmarish illusion of the Dark Phoenix, seeking to break his will. Throughout this conflict, Professor Xavier is held in a mysterious prison, struggling to escape. The turning point occurs when the spirit of Jean Grey intervenes, breaking Mastermind’s mental hold over Cyclops. Without Mastermind’s control, Takeo goes berserk and kills Mastermind, ending his scheme.
Mastermind’s key relationships are defined by his role as a leader and manipulator. He commands the Inner Circle and its enforcers, and he exploits Takeo’s vulnerability to serve his plans. His primary adversarial relationship is with the X-Men, particularly Cyclops, and he is indirectly opposed by the lingering influence of Jean Grey. His development is static; he remains an unrepentant manipulator until his death, which results from his overconfidence and underestimation of the emotional ties between his enemies.
His notable abilities center on illusion casting. He can create false sensory experiences that are indistinguishable from real ones, affect perceptions on a large scale, and directly implant images and sensations into a target’s mind. He uses these powers to deceive, control, and psychologically break his opponents. His illusions can be sustained over distances and can mimic any appearance or scenario. Mastermind lacks physical strength, relying entirely on his psionic talents.
