Description
Eric Brooks, known to the vampire underworld as Blade, is the central protagonist of the 2011 Marvel anime series. He is a Daywalker, a unique hybrid born with vampire traits after his pregnant mother was attacked and turned by a powerful vampire named Deacon Frost. This origin event left Blade with the superhuman abilities of a vampire, including enhanced strength, speed, agility, and a rapid healing factor, but crucially without most of their classic weaknesses. He is resistant to sunlight, which allows him to operate freely during the day, and silver does not harm him in the same way it does pureblood vampires. However, he is not immune to the insatiable vampire thirst for blood, a dark urge he must constantly suppress.
Blade’s personality is defined by a stoic and grim demeanor, forged by a lifetime of tragedy and a singular, focused mission. He is a man of few words, often appearing cold and emotionally distant as a means of hiding the deep-seated torment caused by his dual nature and his past. He is driven by a relentless desire for revenge against Deacon Frost, the four-fanged vampire who destroyed his mother and is responsible for his own cursed existence. This hunt takes him across the globe, eventually leading him to Japan in pursuit of a powerful vampire organization known as Existence. Despite his hardened exterior, this anime incarnation portrays Blade as more compassionate and rounded than some of his other adaptations. His stoicism is a shield, and beneath it lies a capacity for empathy, particularly for those who have also suffered at the hands of vampires.
His primary role in the story is as a solitary hunter who finds himself forming unexpected alliances. The narrative follows his investigation into the organization Existence, which is led by his nemesis, Deacon Frost, who is conducting twisted experiments to perfect vampirism. Key to his background is his relationship with his mentor, Noah van Helsing, a descendant of the legendary Abraham van Helsing. In this version of his origin, it is Noah who takes a young Eric Brooks under his wing, providing him with the training, weapons, and the crucial anti-vampirism serum he needs to control his bloodlust and focus his violent impulses on hunting his own kind.
Blade’s journey involves a significant relationship with a young Japanese woman named Makoto. Initially, she seeks to kill Blade for executing her father after he was turned into a vampire, a harsh but merciful act Blade performed to spare her from being killed by her own parent. As the series progresses, Makoto comes to understand Blade’s difficult choice and the weight he carries. She recognizes that they are kindred spirits, both having lost loved ones to vampires and both pushing forward for the greater good. She eventually chooses to work alongside him, becoming a trusted partner in his quest to stop Frost and Existence. This partnership is a key part of Blade’s character development, as it forces him to engage with another person on a deeper level and allows a glimmer of his more human side to surface.
In terms of abilities, Blade is a master of both armed and unarmed combat, blending his superhuman physicality with a disciplined fighting style. His signature weapons are a specially designed sword, a katana, and a set of three-bladed silver glaives that he can throw with deadly accuracy. He is also shown to know several deadly sword techniques. To keep his vampire instincts at bay, Blade relies on a special serum that he injects into his neck, a painful but necessary ritual to maintain his humanity and focus. The series explores his past in greater depth than some other versions, providing a more nuanced look at the tortured hero who has dedicated his entire existence to eradicating the vampire threat, all while fighting the monstrous urges within himself.
