Description
Kikyo, also known as Mikage Kikyo, is a character from the Marvel Anime universe, specifically appearing in the Wolverine and Blade animated series. He is a human mutant and an assassin driven by a strict personal code of honor. Standing approximately five feet ten inches tall with black hair and brown eyes, Kikyo is a formidable and complex figure whose past is deeply intertwined with that of the vampire hunter Blade.

Kikyo's background is largely defined by his training in swordsmanship under Master Yagyu Tanba. It was at this dojo where he studied alongside a fellow student named Eric Brooks, who would later become Blade. Kikyo shared a deep bond with his teacher and felt a powerful sense of rivalry with Eric, believing that a final duel was necessary when Eric decided to leave. When Eric refused, Kikyo persisted to the point where Eric was forced to slash his Achilles' tendons to stop him. Following this incident, Master Tanba forced Kikyo to leave the dojo to experience the real world, a separation that would have lasting consequences for him.

In terms of personality, Kikyo is characterized by an unwavering and almost obsessive sense of honor. He is a skilled and proud warrior who disdains what he considers to be dishonorable tactics, such as the use of firearms. This code dictates many of his actions; for instance, he refuses to fight an exhausted or distracted opponent, as victory under such circumstances would bring no honor. Despite his villainous or anti-heroic roles, this sense of honor can also compel him to do the right thing, such as when he joins forces with Wolverine to defeat a creature that killed an innocent woman. Kikyo is driven by a powerful need for a worthy duel, particularly with his old friend and rival, Blade, and he harbors a deep-seated need for revenge against those who have wronged him or his master.

Kikyo's role in the story shifts between antagonist and reluctant ally. He is first introduced as a formidable enemy hired by the crime lord Yashida Shingen to kill Wolverine. Their battles are intense and often end in stalemates, with Kikyo choosing to postpone their duels for more honorable circumstances. Eventually, his honor leads him to break from Shingen's service and join Wolverine and Yukio in their assault on the Dragon Palace. Later, he is employed by the vampire Deacon Frost, which brings him into direct conflict with Blade. In this role, he is sent to recruit or eliminate targets for Frost, but his true motivation is revealed to be a personal vendetta against Frost for turning his beloved master, Tanba, into a vampire.

Kikyo's key relationships are central to his character. His relationship with Blade, born from their shared past as students, is one of rivalry, respect, and a desire for a definitive duel. Their encounters are filled with reminiscences of their history together. His relationship with Master Tanba is the most significant, as Tanba was not only his teacher but a father figure. When Kikyo learns that Tanba was turned into a vampire by Deacon Frost, his horror and sense of responsibility drive him to swear that he will make amends by ending his master's unlife. His alliances are typically temporary and situational, such as his team-up with Wolverine, where mutual respect is earned through combat.

Kikyo undergoes notable development throughout his appearances. He begins as a mercenary warrior-for-hire, guided solely by his pride and desire for battle. His experiences, particularly witnessing the corruption of his master, force him to confront his past. He realizes that his honor has deeper implications than simply winning duels, leading him to swear revenge on Frost. By the end of his story arc, he transitions from a self-serving fighter to a more focused avenger, pledging to assist Blade and settle his own scores, demonstrating a shift from rivalry to a form of grim camaraderie.

Kikyo possesses several notable abilities that make him a dangerous combatant. He has an accelerated healing factor, a mutant ability that allows him to recover from wounds rapidly. His primary weapons are a pair of retractable arm-swords made of the virtually indestructable metal adamantium, which can extend from his forearms. Combined with his masterful swordsmanship, learned under Master Tanba, these abilities allow him to fight on equal footing with both Wolverine and Blade. His physical capabilities, including his speed and strength, are highly augmented, making him a superhuman assassin.
