Description
Kintarō Tōyama is a first-year student and a regular member of the Shitenhōji Middle School tennis team, famously known as the Super Rookie of the West. He is characterized by his small stature, standing at 151 centimeters tall, which contrasts sharply with his immense and almost superhuman physical abilities. His signature appearance includes slightly tanned skin, maroon-red hair, and a distinctive leopard-print tank top that he often wears over his team jersey.

Kintarō possesses a personality that is as wild and untamed as his playing style. He is extremely carefree, naive, and full of boundless energy, approaching life and tennis with an infectious, childlike enthusiasm. His thinking is highly unconventional, and his grasp of academics, particularly the Japanese language, is notably weak; he famously misreads his rival Ryoma Echizen's name as Koshimae. This naivety also fuels a vivid imagination, leading him to genuinely believe that his own captain, Kuranosuke Shiraishi, has a deadly poison claw hidden beneath the bandages on his arm, a fear born from reading a manga.

Despite his playful and sometimes rude demeanor, Kintarō is not malicious but rather driven by a pure and straightforward love for competition. His primary motivation is to find and defeat strong opponents, with Ryoma Echizen being his main rival from the east. His journey in tennis began only a few months before entering Shitenhōji, when he was defeated by an old woman named Reika Yakusugi, affectionately called Grandma Sugi, a former Wimbledon doubles champion. Through countless matches with her, he grew to love the sport, and he treasures the antique wooden racket she gave him before she passed away.

In the story, Kintarō serves as a formidable force of nature who disrupts the more technical and strategic play of other characters. While he is a member of the Shitenhōji team, his relationship with his captain, Shiraishi, is unique; Shiraishi is one of the few people who can control Kintarō, exploiting his irrational fear of the poison claw to keep him in line. Shiraishi also recognizes Kintarō's immense talent, declaring him the strongest player on their team. Kintarō shares a friendly but intense rivalry with Seiichi Yukimura of Rikkai University, whom he challenged nearly one hundred times before finally securing a victory. His relationship with Ryoma Echizen is central to his identity; their first meeting results in a single-point match that ends in a draw when the ball is split in half, cementing their status as equals and rivals.

Kintarō's development throughout the series involves harnessing his raw, instinctive power within the structured world of competitive tennis. He is an all-rounder whose style is based on wild, unpredictable movements and sheer physical dominance rather than refined technique. His most notable ability is his signature shot, the Super Ultra Great Delicious Big Wheel Mountain Storm, a powerful stroke that uses a full-body rotation. He later develops a service version called the Super Megaton Wonder Deluxe Mountain Eruption Serve. As he faces stronger opponents, he unlocks advanced mental states like the Pinnacle of Effortless Perfection, demonstrating his vast potential for growth. His physical prowess is so extraordinary that he is rumored to be able to lift a motorcycle and run from Shin-Fuji to Tokyo, and he is even feared by local yakuza.
