Description
Kyouko Shirafuji is the manager of the family restaurant Wagnaria, a position she was given by the owner when he left to search for his missing wife. She is twenty-eight years old with black hair, which she wears in a short bob cut, and black eyes. In her youth, Kyouko was a sukeban, a female gang leader who commanded a group of male yakuza followers. During this time, she wore a distinctive outfit consisting of a long, ankle-length skirt and a mask, and she carried a nail bat. She was renowned for her fighting prowess and had numerous disciples, many of whom remain loyal to her as convenient juniors who will carry out any task with a single phone call.
Despite her past as a fearsome delinquent, Kyouko now presents herself as extremely lazy and apathetic about her duties as a manager. She spends most of her time avoiding work, often loafing around the restaurant or eating. Her philosophy is that her lack of work is itself a job, as it forces the staff to be more diligent. She is a glutton with an enormous appetite, consuming massive quantities of food daily without any apparent weight gain or health issues. On average, she eats about five parfaits a day, all prepared by her loyal coworker Yachiyo Todoroki. She becomes agitated if she does not receive food and will eagerly await the owner's return because he typically brings sweets. Beyond eating, Kyouko has a short temper and is particularly sensitive about her age, retaliating against anyone who calls her old by doubling their shifts or taking other punitive actions.
Kyouko is highly skilled in combat, a remnant of her days as a gang leader, and she does not hesitate to use physical force against unruly customers who harass her employees. She firmly believes that the staff's well-being takes priority over customer satisfaction since they are the ones performing the actual work. Even in her managerial role, she maintains connections with her former gang, who often keep watch outside the restaurant and carry out her orders, such as collecting money from customers who flee without paying.
The most significant relationship in Kyouko's life is with Yachiyo Todoroki. When Yachiyo was a child being bullied, Kyouko rescued her and subsequently offered her protection. From that moment, Yachiyo developed an intense, lifelong admiration and devotion to Kyouko, whom she serves loyally. While Kyouko often treats Yachiyo as a servant who fetches her food, she also displays genuine, if subtle, care for her. She notices when Yachiyo has a fever, urges her to find fulfillment beyond servitude, and initially disapproves of Jun Satou's romantic interest in Yachiyo out of protectiveness.
Kyouko's relationships with other staff members are varied. She initially clashed with new hire Souta Takanashi after he called her old and childish, punishing him by doubling then halving his shifts, but she eventually forgave him, though she continues to view him as a pervert for his obsession with young-looking girls. She teases Popura Taneshima about her short stature, so Popura never seeks comfort from her. Jun Satou resents Kyouko because Yachiyo's affections are focused on her, though Kyouko remains oblivious to his loathing. Unusually, Hiroomi Souma, who knows secrets about everyone else, has no information on Kyouko, likely because she intimidates him. She also shows little concern for the antics of the clumsy Aoi Yamada.
Despite her outward laziness and apparent indifference, Kyouko demonstrates a sharp understanding of the people around her. She correctly identifies Mahiru Inami's feelings for Takanashi and Yachiyo's feelings for Sato, showing she is more perceptive than her behavior suggests. Over the course of the story, while her eating habits and lazy disposition remain unchanged, she exhibits subtle development in her protectiveness toward Yachiyo, shifting from passive acceptance of her service to expressing quiet concern for her happiness and well-being. Her motivations are primarily driven by her need for food and her desire to maintain her comfortable, work-free existence, but she also holds a deep, unspoken loyalty to the employees she considers her own, especially Yachiyo.
