Description
Jun Satou is a 20-year-old university student who works as the head chef at the Wagnaria family restaurant. He stands 180 centimeters tall with a slim but firm build. His original hair color is black, but he dyes it blonde and typically styles it with his bangs covering his left eye. His eyes are light brown to yellow, and he is often seen smoking during his breaks, preferring a fictional cigarette brand. His birthday is January 18th.
Along with Hiroomi Souma, Satou is one of the chefs at the restaurant. However, because Souma habitually avoids doing any actual work, Satou functions as the lone chef, taking on the bulk of the kitchen duties without complaint. He is generally silent and reserved, spending most of his time working in the kitchen, but he occasionally speaks up to act as the voice of reason, telling his colleagues to stop fooling around and get back to work. Despite his quiet and serious demeanor, he is a very good listener. He continues working at a fast pace while his coworkers share their troubles, and after they finish, he offers pragmatic advice and helpful tips.
While he may seem indifferent at first glance, Satou genuinely cares about the well-being of his coworkers. For instance, he once stopped what he was doing to make porridge for Yachiyo Todoroki when she was sick, and he often consoles Popura Taneshima when she is depressed about her height, sometimes giving her fabricated encouragement that she will grow taller. He is notably more gentle and caring toward the female staff. When male employees mess up, he does not hesitate to hit them with a frying pan, but when the women make mistakes, he instead takes out his anger on the male coworkers. The only exception is Aoi Yamada, whose theft and dish-breaking tendencies make her the sole female employee he physically disciplines, often by pressing his fists against her temples.
Satou's primary character motivation is his long-standing, unrequited love for Yachiyo Todoroki. He has been deeply in love with her since they first met, and his feelings have remained one-sided for four years. Although he buys birthday gifts for her each year, he has always lacked the courage to give them to her. His jealousy over Yachiyo's obsessive admiration for the restaurant manager, Kyouko Shirafuji, often manifests in frustration, which he typically vents by teasing Popura about her height or messing with her hair. He also deeply dislikes Kyouko for monopolizing Yachiyo's attention and consuming the restaurant's food supplies.
The story of his romantic development takes a pivotal turn when new employee Aoi Yamada bluntly reveals Satou's crush to Yachiyo. This leaves Yachiyo feeling confused and depressed. To mitigate the situation, Satou fabricates a story about a ghost haunting Yachiyo, claiming that his attention stems from pity. Much to his dismay, Yachiyo accepts this lie and tells him that he is the man she loves the most as a friend. This leads Satou to decide to give up on her and leave the restaurant. However, Popura encourages him to take action on his feelings instead of waiting for Yachiyo to notice him on her own. He takes her advice, setting a deadline for himself to confess his feelings. This culminates in a successful mutual confession, and they finally become a couple. After this, Yachiyo steps down from her position as chief of staff, and their relationship eventually progresses to marriage.
Satou has several key relationships that define his role in the story. He is good friends with Souma but often finds him annoying, particularly when Souma teases him about his crush on Yachiyo, and his typical response is to beat him with a frying pan. He serves as a mentor to the newer employee Souta Takanashi, showing him the ropes and explaining things the younger man does not understand. With Mahiru Inami, who has severe androphobia, Satou has a uniquely calm relationship. Because he carefully plans his interactions and keeps a relaxed attitude, Inami has never punched him. However, to even be around him, she must chant that he is a woman to fool herself into thinking he is female. Satou is one of the first three workers at Wagnaria, alongside Kyouko and Yachiyo, which gives him a foundational understanding of the restaurant's operations.
Satou possesses several notable abilities. Foremost among them is his skill as a chef, as he is the head cook responsible for preparing food orders. He is also a very efficient multitasker, capable of cooking at a high pace while actively listening to and providing counsel for his coworkers. He is unusually proficient with a frying pan, which he uses both as a cooking tool and as a comedic device for disciplining his male colleagues. He also has a peculiar habit of claiming to have asthma attacks whenever someone calls him by his given name, Jun, though this is widely believed to be a lie to prevent Yachiyo from addressing him so familiarly.
