Description
Misaki Ayuzawa is the protagonist of the story. She is a sixteen-year-old high school student who serves as the first female student council president at Seika High School, an institution that was previously all-boys and only recently became co-ed, resulting in a student body that is eighty percent male. She is known among the male students for her strict, no-nonsense attitude and earns the nickname Demon President. Her background is marked by hardship: her father abandoned the family, leaving behind a massive debt. This event caused a profound shift in her personality; before her father left, she was described as a gentle, encouraging, and helpful girl. Afterward, she developed a deep distrust and prejudice toward most boys, viewing them as unreliable and inconsiderate, though she makes exceptions for those she considers gentlemanly. Her primary motivations are twofold. First, she is fiercely dedicated to protecting the female students at her school and improving the learning environment. Second, she secretly works a part-time job at a maid cafe called Maid Latte in a neighboring town to help her mother pay off the debt left by her father. She keeps this job a closely guarded secret because she believes that if her classmates discovered it, she would lose her authority and respect as student council president. Misaki is exceptionally hardworking, putting maximum effort into her studies, athletics, and her duties as president. She does not care much about fashion and struggles with cooking, but she is highly responsible, athletic, and academically gifted. Her role in the story centers on the tension between her public persona as a tough, capable leader and her private life as a maid. This conflict is triggered when Takumi Usui, a popular and perceptive classmate, discovers her secret. Instead of exposing her, he becomes a regular at the cafe and takes an interest in her. Their relationship forms the emotional core of the story, starting from antagonism and slowly developing into mutual affection and eventually a romantic partnership. Key relationships include her close bond with her younger sister Suzuna and her mother Minako, for whom she bears the financial burden. Over the course of the story, Misaki undergoes significant development. Her rigid prejudice against men begins to soften through her interactions with Takumi, who challenges her assumptions and supports her without ever trying to undermine her. She learns to open up emotionally and balance her fierce independence with the ability to rely on others. Among her notable abilities, she is trained in aikido, which she uses on occasion, and she possesses remarkable stamina and determination. She is also known for a tsundere-like tendency where she becomes flustered and harsh when teased, especially by Takumi, contrasted with her sweet and dainty demeanor while working as a maid. Ultimately, she grows from a girl driven solely by duty and distrust into a woman capable of love and vulnerability, earning a career as a diplomat or lawyer and eventually marrying Takumi.
